Thanks Timmy.
Their website then is slightly confusing - unless they are phasing out the full mineral version.

HPR looks like its just their generic oil name...

HPR 30, 40 and 50 are mineral oils while HPR 0, 5, 10, 15 are synthetic .... then there are a bunch of HPR semi-synthetics...

Basically synthetics beat ex-dino food for lubrication in any test you might choose.. except for one parameter...$$$ (at least that's the view of the guy in charge of the Army's lubrication lab).

Cheers, Ian

Synthetics are better in just about every way for an engine. But we're not just dealing with an engine here - we're dealing with a synchromesh gearbox too, and that adds complications. In the same way that using modern friction modifying oils in a motorbike can cause issues with wet clutches, additives can cause big problems with our gearboxes. It's also commonly reported that synthetic oil causes issues with seals leaking, but I've personally never seen that (but I never used synthetic oil either).

There's a good chance that synthetic oils are better for our engines, but it's certainly no guarantee. When it comes to oil the best bet is to see what oils others use and recommend.

I used to use XLD CLASSIC but it became harder to get as autobarn near me didn't stock it as a regular item.
In Bunnings the other day and they had a pallet load of it for about $19 each. So bought 6x.

Works for me in price and functionality.

I always used XLD classic too, and never had any problems. Good pressure both cold and hot.

According to some XLD Premium is very similar to classic, has the same amount of zinc, and just complies to stricter standards. Others have reported that Premium doesn't maintain pressure as well as the Classic.

I didn't even know you could still get Classic, I thought it was replaced with Premium. I haven't seen it for a long time.

Years ago I was using HPR30 and wore out my Camtech VP3 cam and lifters in 30,000 miles.
I fitted an RE13 cam and new lifters and ran Valvoline classic instead, no more problems.

I have just pulled down a 1310 which trashed all its lifters and the 266 cam in 15,000 km. Oil? HPR30.
Might not totally be the oil's fault, but..
I won't use it anymore.

Am using Gulf Western XP in my 1360.

For what it's worth SuperCheap have 30% off all Penrite engine oils tomorrow (6th July) only - not sure if that'll be of any help to anyone?
I might go and pick up something if it's (really) cheap, to use as an engine flush before putting the proper stuff in.
