epoxy etch primer will adhere to brass copper steel etc White Knight Bunnos I have used it on the S block comes in a pressure can.
People usually paint engine blocks in enamel straight onto the casting.2 pack epoxy is the ultimate which I use on the body ,I use the white knight Epoxy etch on most parts .

I have used Dulux "All metal primer" for about 30 years under engine enamel colour coat. It is enamel and quite cheap. There is an aerosol version but the tin version has lots of ground up (zinc?) powder in it and can be brushed or sprayed. If I don't use a primer, the colour coat will peel and crack around edges over time etc.

Zinc chromate used to be the best for alloy, used on all outboard motors etc. But apparently it's carcinogenic so is NLA now.
It worked great... :(

I would imagine the cleaner you get the engine , the better the paint will adhere and last, but it would take a fair bit of time in doing the prepwork if you want a good result .

My engine was originally painted by the previous owner and lasted prob 12 yrs before it started going
off (it's knackered now ) and needs a tidy up , car and engine has been built for around 26 yrs so not bad going in my books .

Looks like zinc chromate primer is still available in USA from Mercury and others.

But zinc phosphate recommended here for aviation use.

Its still available in Australia, made by Gold Cross. Banned in some countries - ie US (FDA). Gentian Violet for mouth thrush is gone, so is Coloxyl with Danthron (now has senna) for constipation. Just FYI.
