Hi All

We have a 1970 mini van that we have just registered after a complete restoration. We are going through a shakedown process to eliminate any problems, do fine tuning etc. One problem that we are stuck on is the connection between the manifold and the engine pipe of our genuine van exhaust purchased from a local mini provider. The engine pipe does not square up properly with the manifold outlet, so we have been jacking up the pipe to what appears to be a flush position, using muffler putty to ensure a seal between the two pipes and then using a standard mini saddle bracket to fasten together. When this does work, and often I have to do it 2 -3 times to get a seal, it last about a month and starts leaking again.

Does anyone know of a better mechanism to ensure a leak free join?

Barry

You may need to release the engine steady or even modify it so the manifold lines up properly.

or put in on a hoist at an exhaust shop and ask that the pipe be properly aligned (bent) with the flange etc

Early Minis had the 2 half clamps of pressed metal. They can bend when they get hot.
Morris 1100, and later Minis? had a steel casting, split and machined. They clamp better.

Thanks everyone for responses.

Yes I have an old blown out cast steel version in an old parts box. I haven't seen these on any of the online stores, only the pressed metal versions. Anyone know where to get them now?

Just spoke to John Smidt at MKO. He has plenty of second-hand ones if you are stuck. His contact phone numbers are in the Mini Businesses folder.

Thanks so much winabbey. Will have another look at the one I have to see if it can be recovered, and if not contact John. Also thinking about the suggestion about straightening the pipe. Might be a better long term solution.

I agree. If you can get the tailpipe to sit nicely in the end of the exhaust manifold and at the same time match up with the original pipe mounting points there should be no strain anywhere in the system and hence no need to force things.

To finish off this 'story', took the van to a local exhaust shop, they took exhaust off, after carefully measuring the alignment, bent the engine pipe, reinstalled and now perfect. Thanks everyone for your advice
