Hi All,

I've picked up a set of wheels recently and I'm looking at what I can do about the wheel nuts.

The mini stud thread is 3/8"
Wheel hole diameter 9/16" (0.5625" or 14.3mm)
Rim face thickness is 1" (25mm)
They need to be the shank/sleeve type with washers

Most of the ones I can find the right length are too round in diameter for the wheels, and the couple with the right diameter are too long...

So:
Can someone find something off the shelf that looks like it will work?
Drill out the wheels to the bigger nut diameter?
Cut the long wheel nuts short?
Any other options?

Cheers, Tim

Shorten the long ones if diameter is correct.

Bore the wheels out to suit.

LugnutKing on Ebay might be able to help.

http://stores.ebay.com.au/LUGNUT-KING

got some security Nuts from him, and was able to send two sets identical for a spare "key".

This might be a good option, although if they are chrome plated it might cause problems? It might also be a bit dodgy from a safety perspective if they were designed to be a larger diameter?

I might have to see how deep the thread goes too before cutting them down

These ones would look to be the best so far for a reasonable price - Shank length under the flat washer is 28mm. Shank diameter is 13.9mm.

Thanks, I'll see if they have any that'll work.

That would also be a good idea, although I'm not 100% sure I'd do this myself. At least the wheels have plenty of meat on them

I sent him a message yesterday and he didn't have any that would suit the wheels as they are. He does have some that would fit if the holes were bigger!

I might take them along to the local wheel repair place and see if they have any experience or can suggest anything else. I can also have a peek through their centre cap box to see if they have any that'll work

Would another idea be to make a thicker washer for the longer ones?

the wheel repair place would drill the holes bigger for you... best to buy nuts off the shelf so you can replace any you lose

Most of the sets come with 3mm thick washers, I'd need to add at least another 6mm so that they don't bottom out on the studs which might be a bit thick!

I do like the Contessas but they are pretty common, and I don't think I've ever bought two sets of tyres for the same set of wheels

Yes that does make sense.

Yes, I haven't seen another set in person and read on here you used to have a set! Do you have any other information about them?

I found this today on Facebook - Classic Australian Mag Wheels. It’s the only period reference I’ve found!

January 1967 would have to be some of the earliest mini alloys too
