Someone must have the text of that story about the Fat Geezer in the Mini Cooper.

Yes, I have it on file. Will find and post. Cheers, JimB.

Ha, ha. That's fantastic. :D

All of the retired police who drove the Cooper S that I've spoken to have their own stories and anecdotes about life on the road back then.

They even laugh at themselves, sometimes. This cartoon was in the NSW Police News newsletter in Sept. 1971.

Interesting interior photo in that listing. At first glance it looked like mine, but I notice a few differences. If it is an "actual police car" then it's a recent photo and not taken back in the day. Regardless the main items are there so it looks good.

Back to the original question, the answer is yes and no. Yes, that model of speedometer was used by NSW Police in the Cooper S and later pursuit vehicles, but the black face as issued by SW and still fitted to that unit was replaced by a white-faced version in MPH. Later a dual scale MPH/KMH dial was used.

A couple of little stories I recall about NSW Police S's. I was doing my National Service back in 1968/69 era and we had a couple of new Cooper S's in our group and every month or so did a Melb/Syd return trip sometimes taking both S's other times just one of them. I can recall seeing a Police S in pursuit of some one back then, it was quite eye opening what occurred, the Police S pulled out from behind us from a couple of car back, overtook us then went 3 wide as he overtook a car that was overtaking, the Police S was 3 wide left wheels on the bitumen and drivers side in the gravel, he pulled in a car that was maybe a dozen or so cars ahead of us, this was on an open highway so speeds would have been 100 plus km.

Another I can recall we had taken both the S's to Sydney and some where over the border in NSW we stopped for a drink then took off again, it was night time and I was driving the second car, out of no where a Police S appeared and slotted in between the two of us in roared up the rear of my friends S and he thought it was me, as he saw a Mini in his rear view mirror, so he took off like a rocket thinking I wanted a bit of spirited driving, he was in for a big surprise when the Cop pulled him over, I can't recall what he booked him for.

Police S was good for 106mph downhill. So Mr Plod told me, after I slowed down for a town back in 1969. He wasn't impressed that my Fiat 124 sport had outrun him.:(
Edit:
this was before NSW became speed zoned. Open road was open season unless you were 'driving at a speed dangerous to the public'.
Hard to prove then, unless you did something dumb.

Highly questionable police actions...

In the 60s my Dad would pile into an 850 in Melbourne with three other Navy mates and drive continuously, overnite (10 hours springs to mind), swapping drivers, for a long weekend in Sydney...before you throw up your hands in the air, ANY Mini, regardless of power, is a great point-to-point car...those were different days when derestricted speed limits applied...

I knew a few wallopers when I was young and stupid (friends/acquaintances/not from behind bars!), something some told me made me wince...

Standard practice (for some) was sitting in the car in 1st, floor it and hit the starter...still think those ex-Police cars are really desirable?? :P

Back in the 60s, Wheels magazine, Modern Motor and others used to rate performance cars on their ET from Sydney to Melbourne or Brisbane.
From memory the speedy order once was Prince Skyline GT, Renault Gordini, Cooper 1275S...!
Seems inconceivable to do that these days.

Sadly...speed is all the revenuer gummint and the Police mostly talk about...when there are so very many other factors that contribute to any road toll

Doc, Prince Skyline GT looked impressive with its triple side draughts but performed disappointingly at Bathurst AFAIR

Mick,
The Prince Skyline GT was only a 2.0L 6 and a heavy cast iron lump. My mate blew his up, it then went harder and handled better with a Waggott Holden186 and 12 port head, with the Skyline's triple Solex PHH carbs bolted on.

Ha! Hoons! The Nissan 3 litre black out of VL might be sweeter... :D

But we digress...
