Has anyone played around with a more modern solution to the mechanical speedo cable while still maintaining the original look?
I run a Weber box and have very little if any room for accommodate a speedo cable. I have seen a bit of feedback on the 90 degree adaptors being prone to failure.
I know that a lot more GPS options are becoming available for speedos, but I really would like to keep the original smiths look.

You can get a Smiths speedo with electronic internals, James here has one installed, apparently it's pretty good

I have 90 degree adapter on my car and have no issues at all, nor I should because it's designed to do the job. Mine is one that was fitted to Jaguars, not sure which models. Wasn't expensive, got it from a wreckers. Sorry, can't remember the price but $30 rings a bell.

Sorry I don't recall what model/ vintage Jags they come off. I got mine from a Jag wrecker who said he had sold a few to Mini owners with our setup. They are perfect for the job, takes 2 minutes to install and the cable rests against the firewall wall away from the extractors.

Electronic speedo drive. The little black dot on the speedo drive boss (right hand side) is a Hall effect switch, the silver dot in the white ring on the drive itself (left hand side) is a magnet. When the magnet passes the switch it pulses. I didn't really expect it to work

I originally made it to talk to a speedo I built out of a Subaru speedo head, mini odometer and mini speedo face.

The electronics I made didn't work out (too much electrical noise) so it now talks to my ECU which I Bluetooth to a phone in a holder on the dash. My speedo doesn't do anything, but one day when I don't have 10,000 other things on the go I'll make it work

Ah, so this just sits down on the end of the gearbox as if it is the speedo cable drive, but it just generates a pulse for an electric speedo.

If you buy the Smiths electronic speedo for ~$500 it comes with a similar mounted sensor.

I have an angled speedo converter if it's required. Just screw one end into your speedo and voila.

Yeh that's what I'm trying to avoid haha.
