CVs and pot joints only click if grease is dried out. I agree, quite useable. Pack with LMM molygrease.

Oooo. That's good news. Next... I've measured the diameter of the stub shaft at 1.242". Is that ok?

And why does one housing have the ball track all the way to the back (pot on left) and the other housing has a "rebate" at the back?



So are these housings ok for a stock non s 1275?

When you assemble them, the cage that holds the ball bearings can go on two ways. If you get it wrong they are more likely to come apart when the suspension is unloaded or you increase the negative camber.

Be aware there are 2 different pot joint inside diameters... early ones are smaller. You can't mix and match their inner spiders and cages with the outers.
We found this out the hard way...!!

Gotcha.

Yes. I've got one early pot joint and one later pot joint. But whoever put this together kindly used the correct cage to suit. So they both fit correctly.

Both pot joints share the same dimension between outer tracks though. It's just that one has more meat than the other.

I sketched this up. Measurements are likely to be off a fraction but you'll get the gist of it

Just chatting to John Smidt who saw this post. He suggests you swap the sides when refitting - right one to the left side and vice versa. He says this will reduce any noise from partly worn parts. I have no personal knowledge of this so will leave it to others on here to confirm or reject that suggestion.

Yes an oldie but a goodie. I do this too.

FYI. Also if your really poor and have a clicky outer CV joint, grease them up and swap sides too.

Swapping sides will have the balls being driven on the opposite side of the groove and therefore away from where it is worn.
Also it might drive slightly further in or out of the pot so it may not line up at all with where it is worn

Ok. I'm happy with the swapping sides...but what about the issue I have with one earlier style and one later style of pot joint?

but you'll need to swap the inners from one shaft to the other...
