Some years ago there was this thread:

http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic ... ght=12g201

on the subject of a 12G201 cylinder head.

At that stage, no one seemed to have heard of a 12G201. . .well, now another one has turned up:

It's an early small-bore head (sculpted manifold face) has very square inlet ports and has (I think) 12G295 sized valves in it - although I'm not sure whether these are original or not.

Anyone have any ideas as to what 12G201 heads were originally fitted to?

Maybe they're from an Austin Healey Sprite?

There's no truth in that, just a pure guess.

Sorry to bring alive an old thread but did anyone solve the origins of the 12g201 head? Just took the rocker cover off of my automatic 998 engine to find a 12g201 casting number... the head has obviously been changed at some point in time as it is red and the rest of the engine is original green.

Thanks
Michael

A discussion here on a U.K. forum - link : http://mk1-forum.net/viewtopic.php?f=3& ... ing+number

Does anyone know why Leyland marked up some of the components with one

Examples:
From the main site, Mark has got hold of this excellent blueprint for the
12G295 small bore head
http://mk1-performance-conversions.co.uk/12G295_drawing.pdf
The drawing quotes it as 12G294...

The C-AEG648 camshaft is marked up as "649"...

There is a passing reference to this practice in the Vizard book, but I have
never seen an official explanation. I suppose that in pre-computer days,
it would not really matter as any documentation would be paper based and
it would be easy to find, even if "filed" one digit wrong. In this day and age,
you would probably just get "Computer says 'No'..." as a reply.

it was always done this way (on cast stuff)

the part number is the id of the current evolution of the part (or at least the 'finished job')

the cast number is the id of the casting

i.e a 12G294 is the bare 'dumb' casting

the 12G295 is the machined item.

they wouldn't renumber the bare casting everytime they changed something other wise they would end up with literally hundreds of casting part numbers for very similar items - just look at the factory blueprints for how many minute changes occur over the life of a casting

it was also probably done this way from a costing point of view - i.e a 12g294 cost '£10', where as a 12g295 cost '£100' as it took into account all the machining costs.

The 12g201 is a std head on the UK 998 minis I bought 15 of these head new a few years back I still have a couple left, they are the same casting as a 12G202 head, same valve size, same port dimension's, a really good head for the small bore motors.
