Hi Everyone,

I thought I had managed to solve my fuel tank problems by picking up a new (only about 30-40 years old) fuel tank to replace my old broken holy one. Of course after filling my boot with petrol the first time (when my first fuel tank had holes), I decided that it would be a good idea to test this one before going into the car.

Alas, although no holes in the fuel tank itself, it appears to leak from around the fuel sender electrical plug. I'm not very good at explaining, but there are the 2 fuel sender connecters. One small connecter on the metal base plate itself, then there is a larger plug that seems to sit on top of a small raised cylinder (hopefully this makes sense).

The fuel seems to slowly drip from around the larger plug sitting on-top of the cylindrical section. Is this something that could be fixed without replacing the entire fuel sender unit?

On a nearly completey different topic, I also noticed the little pipe out the top of the fuel tank today (a little vent?). Can anyone explain why this is here to me? I assume it is some kind of vent to prevent too much preassure forming inside the tank; however from my understanding of petrol (and vapour preassure) this would just mean that your petrol keeps evaporating and you will eventually lose all your petrol as vapour into your boot?

You could fiddle around trying to seal the connector plug with dexcon or the like but in the long run, a new sender would be easier. Get the gasket too.
The vent is so small it would take a year in the hot sun to evaporate the fuel, maybe longer. The loss is minute.
Early cars just had pipe going from it, out through floor to take fumes away. Later ones are connected via pipe to emission canister under bonnet.

If it is leaking through the actual switch connectors rather than seal....
.... could you swap the sender from your old tank to the "new" ?

The locking ring is a twist fit.... just need to confirm seal is ok before refitting. (Or get a new seal)
