Hi Lindsay,

"I have seen this happen when the recommended film builds are exceeded."

That may explain it. Because of my "bonus" system, a lot of paint went on that car. Film thickness is, well, thick... My cunning plan may have backfired...
Any luck on the paint code?

AJ,

"Was it thoroughly cleaned with a good quality surface prep and a tack cloth before applying the colour"? I don't know about the tack cloth, but it is a professional paint shop? Pretty sure the proper surface prep cleaning was done..

How much paint should I organize to paint 2 doors, boot and bonnet? Would 1 L do it?

Thanks for your advice, much appreciated

Cheers

Michael

Sorry for the late reply, I had a look and couldn't find any code like what you have and it looks like most Mitsubishi codes are similar but have more numbers.

To follow up on my previous comment regarding film builds of paint causing cracking, this is currently happening on the roof of my Alfa and a few other spots on the car. I measured the film builds and got very high numbers, around 1200 microns in places. I am a development chemist for Dulux in auto refinish.

These photo's are boot sections. Note, there is zero bog on this boot (saw it in bare metal).
As you can see, the top coat is just peeling away from the undercoat :-(
Edit: the last photo is the area above the right hand door handle.. Likewise, no bog..
The film thickness does appear to be rather thick...

Cheers

Michael

Where are you? I have the tools to measure.
That paint looks really thick..
On plastics i try to keep overall film thickness to 90um
On Metal 200-300um is typical.
Etch 10um-Primer/filler 60um-Basecoat 25 to 50um-Clear 40 to 50um

Anyway you are in bentleigh i am not far away in Cranbourne. I can perform a non-destructive thickness test.
It is quick and you can have answers in 15 mins.
You can buy me a coffee for my time.
