Hi everyone.

'68 morris 1100cc running a three terminal (all side by side) uprated Lucas 17ACR LRA100 altenator. Something like this: http://minisport.com.au/mini-moke-17acr ... alternator

Left my mini parked for a week, so it got angry at me and when I started it up, my red ignition light stayed on. As I rev the car the light becomes dimmer, but as the car returns to idle, so the red light returns.

Checked my battery. Car off it's at 13v, car at idle it's at 13.5v and revving ~2000-2500rpm it climbs to around 14.5.v

So from what I understand, my system is charging - my altenator is working(?). I removed the brushes and cleaned the commutator and replaced the brushes with brand new ones my mate had, still the light stays on.

Cleaned the terminals around the solenoid.

I just switched altenator with an older one I had, it's doing the same thing still.

I traced the small wire the the ignition light on the dash and cleaned the connections, still does it.

Any ideas?

Its a bit weird isn't it?
If you unplug the IND wire from the alternator does the light stay off?

Just don't do what I did... Make sure the IND and AUX + are around the right way, otherwise you'll get the charging light to come on when it shouldn't be.

Thanks, I only have three terminals, and I know their order. I didn't touch anything on the car when it happened - It just "happened". I'm thinking, and electrical failure or some type, or a bad earth somewhere?

Worn brushes.
Undo the plastic cover on the end, the 2 brushes are in a plastic holder on the end frame. Unclip wires and remove.
Very easy fix. :)

Sorry, I have also changed the brushes for new ones. The old ones were fine.

Probably the internal voltage regulator has gone south then. It's easy to replace too on this model.
Not much else in an alternator that goes wrong electrically.

I think he's said he changed the alternator so it does not seem to be the alternator and hence also the regulator. That's why I was wondering if it is a wiring fault, however unlikely.

Unless both have the same issue, but i'm doubting it. This is a job for auto-electrician I think.

Does the ignition warning lamp illuminate when the key is turned on or does it come on once the engine is started?

Might be time to take it to an Auto Electrician. What is your location?

He said the Voltage at the battery rises when engine is running. I am beginning to suspect Diode problem...
Best to get it checked out. Not much point in playing the guess game. You might blow something else in the process and will end up more expensive to fix. Do the tests I told you to do in PM and if all is OK there it has to be an internal problem. I have no idea where your location is but I can test your Alternator on my test bench if you are in my area. No worries.
