Personally I would not be bypassing anything or even running new wires until I knew what it was doing or where the problem was - but maybe I am just that kinda guy!
The trick is to study the wiring diagram and work out how it works, then methodically work through what it is doing now... where power is and isn't, where earths are and aren't when they should be. Based on what I have already worked out today, you should be able to do some more checks - with reference to the diagram - and narrow it down I reckon.
All I have posted today I have worked out from looking at that wiring diagram. Never saw that diagram before today or worked on a Rover Mini in my life!
