I have seen a few hi-po minis in mags that have had their discs slotted with 4 slots on each face.

A few questions.....

1. Is this really necessary/beneficial? (Who cares - I just like the sound of it )

2. What sorta price should I expect for machining 4 slots into each face of my solid 8.4 discs?

3. Would it be cheaper/better to fit a ventilated disc? (The Mg Metro ones fit straight on, yes?)

If you want 'em, I'd just buy new slotted ones. Yeah they are dearer...
On a road car with EBC Greenstuff pads, I don't think they are needed.

Anonymous moderation means the agro that is built up towards the mods isn't aimed at an individual (fewer "Makk" attacks). Less stress for mods means less moderator "retirements".

I had heard that cross drilled ones are a bit better cause the slotted ones fill up the grooves with pad material and need cleaning out the cross drilled ones are more or less self cleaning.
I think this was on mini mania that I saw it...

well although not a mini my SSS has gti-r breaks up front which are cross drilled and sloted and never had a problem with them. They can pull a little bit due to the grooves but nothing to write home about. I never drove the car with the standard ones on the front but am told the new ones make a hell of a difference. So guess it would be the same thing for a mini. In the end if you have the cash go for it as they look horn.

i heard that they can help stop your rotors getting glazed?! true??? if so, it might make more consistant braking and you wouldnt have to rough up the surface with snadpaper anymore...

I find it's the pads that glaze up, not the rotors.. so I touch 'em up on the linisher if they need it!

My commodore has DBA Gold cross drilled, vented and slotted discs (I guess you can say my wife is heavy on the pedal and i was worried that she couldn't stop on time ) anyway I did have some problems, when the pads that I ran (DBA ultimates, great braking power, wore very quick but harsh on the rotors...) it created a slight lip on the discs, I was told it was really difficult to machine, but eventually my cousin (Ultratune Ashfield) did manage to do it.

If you do get cross drilled etc, spend more money on good pads...

Narp. glazing happened on the pads of poor quality. The cross drilling, slotted and vented discs did nothing to stop that! DBA standards are what I use now on the commodore and they go pretty good. I sometimes forget I am not driving the bombadore and other cars just don't compare

I'm happy with EBC Greenstuffs and stock rotors on the Mini. Kevlar pads don't seem to wear rotors like the metal etc pads did.
On the Ford, I run stock DBA rotors and Bendix std pads. Hey it's only an EA POS...

I have no intention of cross drilling - from what i've read, mini discs arent really big enough to start drilling aswell, it can weaken em.

Short story...
You know you're doing alot of heavy braking when you spend a day at the race track, then have to drive home with only your HANDbrake!!! This happened with my Mazda at Mallala in 2002.... did about 50 laps, was getting faster and faster.... then noticed my brake pedal started hitting the floor.... Had no idea what the problem was - my mag wheels were actually hot to touch and the hi-heat paint on my rear drums had totally burnt off...

Drove home (about 2 hours drive if using speed limits, mostly along a highway, then thru the city and suburbs) with ONLY my handbrake to slow me down.

Turns out the brake pads had gotten SO HOT that their compound changed from a solid.... to something that resembled Tinned Milo!!! The contact pad itself crumbled off when I took the pads out of the calipers.
