With 1100S valves and kent 276 and reasonable compression on a +20 998 I have had to pocket the bores a little for the zoorst valves. This combo worked quite well for me on a roadie, however, I think an re-13 cam would be better these days. all these mods done on a small bore head.

If you machine the zorst valves down to 27mm, there's no need to pocket the block. Still plenty big for a bored out 1098...
Another thing to watch though is if you fit these valves in a smallbore head they stick up 2mm extra. This reduces the valve spring tension and buggers up the rocker angle- reduces valve lift.
I fit a 12mm flat washer (1.6mm approx thickness) under the springs, and pack the rocker posts up 2.0mm.
Anybody wants some proper ground steel packers for this, I can make them...

i would use a 12g202 on a smallblock, cheap, easy to get etc.
if i only had $500 i would spend it on an exhaust, extractors and larger carb.

i would not use a RE-13 on a road going smallblock,
i would use it on a weekend warrior / club car.

There is a number cast into the top surface, under the rocker cover.
Generally it's near the middle, but on some smallbore heads it's up near number 4 cylinder.
There are other numbers cast near the thermostat on a few heads, these are generally not the ID numbers.

a few examples to look for-
smallbore heads-
2A628
12A1456
12G202
12G206
12G295
CAM4180

bigbores-
AEG163
12G940
12G1316

A Morris 1100S can work but there are things to watch out for.

If it's a smallbore motor, the best stock head is a 12G295, used on AH Sprite Mk 2A?, and Cooper 998.
Next best is the 12G202 used on 1098 (Mini and Morris 1100) and 997 Cooper motors. With a bit of a tickle they go fine on a road car.

Yeah, I emant in my case, one car of mine vs. another of similiar spec. I don't own any small bores, just 2 1275 minis. In fact I've never driven anything smaller in motor size.

2A629 is a Morris 850/Mini Deluxe head.
1.090" inlets, 1.000" exhausts.
Nothing special.
Yes you can work it over- I used to- or go find a 12G202 which is a bit bigger inside to start with. They have 1.156" inlets and 1.000" exhausts.
Port that, deck it, then swap em.

I had an RE-13 on a 1098 with a modded 12G202 on the road without any problems. Would do it again as well. You lose a bit of low down power, but if you're searching for power, you won't be looking below 3000rpm anyway! Good cam IMO...

There would be dozens of people on this forum running an RE13 in 1098 roadburners, daily driving, no problem. 8)
