1275 head on it (12g940??), ya gotta pocket the block for valve clearance though. RE13 cam (or a brickworx available one simular, cause you like work there or summit?), corolla rockers, flat top pistons, 45DCOE.

Rocker 998!

High lift rockers won't work on a 998, with a high lift cam, and a 45DCOE is really a bit big...
If you must have the induction noise a 40 would do. Pair of HS2 SU's would be a sweeter drive.
A 1098 crank & pistons in it will give more power and torque for street use. No sunstitute for cubic inches.. 8)

Still too big for a 998 roadie I reckon, if you go to 1098 or bigger then yeah.
Of course for racing a 45 is OK....

Got the Cooper S forged 1.5 rockers in a 998 coupled with an 1100(12G202) head and goes a treat. Kept the cam standard though as it would flounder at low revs with anything hotter. DHLA 40mm will give me that sidedrught roar(thanks Makka!!)

Not even that- original S rockers are 1.25 if you are lucky. My set of stock S ones tested at 1.24 with an RE-13 cam.
The MiniSpares forged S rockers ARE 1.3.
The MiniSpares 1.5 ones are actually 1.58, according to Keith Calver on MM site. Mine tested at 1.55 with RE-13 cam.

Well I built a 998 for a friend recently and it really kicked ass. Here are the specs:
060 overbore
30/70 cam with matched double valve springs
12G202 head. Oversize valves with a bit of cleaning up of the ports
all balanced of course.
1 3/4 inch SU
Extractors, sports exhaust.
on top of a standard Deluxe gearbox with 3.7 diff.

Yeah a Deluxe 3.76 diff is a good idea with a 998. Goes up hills good then..
<edit> 3.76 was used on 997 & 998 Coopers.

Is a 1 3/4 SU too big for a 998? There's a new HS44 I know for sale locally, but I thought maybe 1 1/2 would be better (I have Mr Vizard's book but haven't read it thoroughly...)

Given it would be for a road car, what sort of other mods with the 1 3/4 would suit it?

U would mean HIF44. Theres 2 (well that I know of) 1.75" SU's, the HIF44 which has the float underneith, and the HS6 which has the bowl on the side.

They wouldn't be too big for a hot 998. Maybe for a stock one though.
