Webers are fine carbs but usually give less low end torque than an SU will.
For your auto, I would follow GR's 68mm (1220cc) engine build, use his Weber 44IDF downdraft carb + steel manifold setup.
Like he did, I would drop an 1100 crank in there instead of your 998 one to give you more torque, which the auto is crying out for.
Ain't no substitute for cubic inches if you're after drivability.
I would forget the S/C or a turbo on an automatic. I can see it having clutch and band problems if you do it.
