Check the shaft, bush & needle bearing are OK. Buy a kit if they are stuffed.
Outer bush needs reaming in line, after fitting. Most Mini places can do it for you.

<edit> also check out the knuckle joint cup. Good time to fit a new one, but do the other side too or car will lean...

I'm thinking I might as well put hi-los on the rear and replace the completely whacked shockies on all 4 corners. The rubber cones look reasonable. I probably should do new knuckle joints as well yeah?

If I was going to go all out I think I'd get Koni shocks but I think they're just too expeno. What is a good 'middle of the road' shock absorber?

Jeff has a couple of trailing swing arms. Is there any difference between hydro and dry?

Yes. Don't swap them, geometry is quite different.
Hydro ones have brake pipe at bottom, not top.
