Why did they have the two different sized ring gears? It would seem a good move to fit the 3/8 one if you want a light flywheel but then again they would probably wear out quicker :?:

Old Minis were all 1/2". Automatics were 3/8". A 3/8 can be fitted to save weight.
No it won't wear out any quicker, the bendix pinion stuffs one side of it long before either ring gear is worn out!

Note that Rover etc Minis with the Verto clutch & Lucas pre-engaged starter have a different diameter ring gear. Won't fit early flywheel.

Well I picked up the flywheel from the good doctor today and I've actually had time to look at it and compare it to an existing one...

Gosh! although it's still a heavy pile of metal, lots has been taken off! It even looks bling bling now :D Should go pretty good

Thanks Kev!!! :D 8)

Graham Russell and I both lighten the 1 piece and 2 piece ones the same way for road use, the material spec of both is good old `grey cast iron'.

The 1 piece finish up slightly lighter.

The 2 piece just has a steel centre hub.
