Just doing a bit of research into what ecu i'm going to run, and what ecu can do what. And i've got a few questions about them. I know you run the ecu that you can get tuned, but theres quite a large price difference.

I was originally going to get an adaptronic e420c, and have it as a stand alone unit, as my original car was auto, and ive sold the original ecu so cant run a piggy back system.

Ive just found a cheap megasquirt 2 V3, and i know there a home diy ecu and can be customised to suit the engine. Is it worth using a megasquirt? Or will i need to sort a trigger wheel so i can run distributor less ignition?

Out of interest what is everyone else using and how do you find it?
Cheers,
Joe

Find a tuner first and use what he suggest and is in your budget, no point get the most expensive only to find that the person you take it to has no idea about how to get the most from it. If you get a megasquirt who is going to tune it?

The adaptronic is a very good ECU, shedloads better than the megasquirt.

I was looking at the megasquirt ECU's as well.
There is a newer version called DIY PNP more info can be found here:

http://www.diyautotune.com/diypnp/index.html

The 72pin version allows the standard starlet loom to plug directly in the ECU.
Also this version has been modified to work with the starlets ESA ignition.

Thats all the information I really know. I want to get my mini(4efte) on the road before I start playing with an aftermarket ECU.

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Isaac

That looks very handy, have to check if i kept that part of the loom though, and im quite keen on mappable ignition too.

Im starting to regret getting rid of my ecu, a piggy back would be so much easier and cheaper.

Btw where in brissy are you?

I have a Megasquirt PNP from DIY Autotune in my supercharged MX-5.

It worked straight away with the base map being useable. It is relatively easy to use. There was a dyno tuner available and my car runs quite well.

As said above, you get what you pay for so the Megasquirt isn't for everyone. It's ability to control the idle when the AC cycles on and off is poor on the MX-5.

Upsides:
Cheap
Plug and Play so easy to install
Can do closed loop with wideband o2 sensor
There is a dyno tuner in Toowoomba that can tune them, so it you're near there then that's cool. They aren't, however, the ones that I'd recommend (PM for more)
Can use knock sensor input etc.
Runs my car just fine with no detonation. I'm very happy I didn't pay more.
You can plug it into a PC and do data logging etc so it isn't rock bottom in functionality. In fact it would be better than a lot.
There is now another alternative for getting it tuned. GT Auto in Wilston has had my mate's car for months as he has just left it there and said "learn how to tune Megasquirt, fix the idle control problem and give me the best tune you can" (of course he has $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and $$$$$$$$$$$ to splash around!) They have one of those chassis dynos where the dyno attaches to the wheel drive flanges so there isn't the tyre to roller losses and variability. Apparently they have sorted the idle control and the tune is very good. If I wasn't about to sell my car, I'd take mine there too.

Downsides:
Not sequential so doesn't suit high end stuff.
Not as dense map as high end stuff
Not as many places to get it tuned
Maybe (probably) it was my wiring of the O2 sensor but my battery runs down now.
May be constrained to the igniters you use but I don't know because mine is PNP for the MX-5
The instructions aren't too flash
Doesn't fit into standard computer housing so it has to be mounted differently and an inspector isn't going to be fooled by it.

Anyone in Brisbane is welcome to come check it out and, with notice, check out the software.

BTW GT Auto is literally a few hundred m from my place but I've never been there and am not affiliated with them in any way.

I hope this helps.

M

@blue_deluxe

If you don't want to do anything special (wasted spark, after market ignition etc) you don't have to modify the standard loom at all.

I'm on the Southside near Stones Corner. I'm still in the process of moving so my mini has taken a back seat for a few weeks. I'm keen to get back into it just need to get some time and cash behind me.
