Need to clean the fuel tanks before refitting them to the car.

I was thinking about filling them with molasses & water to remove rust but not sure if molasses will deal with any lacquer build-up if it is present.
Have used POR-15 system in the past with good results, however, I just thought a simpler method would be interesting to try. Some people have used vinegar but molasses would be a lot cheaper I think.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

Using Molasses would surely be like putting sugar in the fuel tank?

I've only used the kit, which worked very well. However I did need to run the cleaning solution through a number of times, plus a tub of nuts as an agitator, to remove all the fuel lacquer. I don't think the molasses will break down the lacquer and fuel deposits. Treating the rust was the easy and least time consuming bit.
