Question for the experts or owners of original MkII Minis:

In the Leyland & Haynes workshop manuals it states that the indicator switch should be positioned at 20 degrees to the horizontal. I just had a quick check on mine and it looks like the self-cancelling pin is at that 20 degrees with the steering straight, so that all makes sense.

The issue I have is that if I position my switch at 20 degrees then the shroud will also need to be at 20 degrees so that I can indicate left - with the shroud join horizontal the stalk will not move far enough to latch.

The shroud at 20 degrees looks odd, does anyone know what is correct?

Cancelling bolt is at 20degs anticlockwise to horizontal. The switch and shroud and centralized over the cancelling bolt.

Not sure exactly what you mean but my K has the shroud/column off the horizonal by about 20 degrees and the blinker stalk is centred in the opening for it.
Photos are a bit hard to see 20 degrees.

A lot of people set theirs to horizontal as it looks better. It doesn't really matter as long as you can still operate the indicator stalk without it getting in the way of your right leg.

Is this the same for Mk1 Minis? Mine is horizontal at the moment, but self cancelling doesn't work properly - the (general) mechanic said the steering rack was probably 1 tooth out when assembled. I'm using this steering rack https://minisport.com.au/mini-moke-stee ... australian.

Should I be making a small modification to the shroud so that the lever sits over the cancelling bolt?

Thanks both - answers my question perfectly and I will adjust mine to suit. The outer column will also need to be turned 20
degrees because the cowl screws to it.

It does seem odd though - the cowl split line could have been kept horizontal with a slightly larger notch in the upper cowl.

Mk1 is pretty much the same setup.
The self-cancelling stud is attached to the inner steering column and normally it is slightly above the horizontal, giving the 20 degree angle, when the steering wheel is in the straight ahead position and the pinch bolt at the bottom of the column is horizontal to the floor.
If the steering wheel and lower pinch bolt are not in these positions, the rack may be off centre.



You should be able to move the outer column and shroud by loosening the clamp at the parcel shelf (not the one on the floor). Adjust the outer column so the self-cancelling fingers line up with the cancelling stud on the inner column.

Well this is certainly a job I’m glad I started!

The thing that started me checking all this is that my column to rack clamp was not lined up as per the workshop manual and Bill B’s photo above and wanted to check the switch/cowl/column outer position before I got the spanners out.

When I went to remove the pinch bolt I found that the clamp was only on the first part of the spline, so the bolt was not passing through the undercut but was sort of jammed over the spline.

So, no safety feature (bolt in undercut) or full clamping on the spline. Been driving round like this for two years. Feeling lucky today.

That was close....
In the '60s a works rally mini had a big off due the mechanic missing that cutout.

Its becoming a very common mistake. The last 2 minis I bought were like this. One of the first things I check now before the test drive.
