I did this once. Driving the car without the deadening in the roof was like driving inside a kettle drum. It was as hot as blazes in summer as well.

I thought it would be good if we had an unmolested Cooper S to check insulation examples against. My car is a very original 1970 Cooper S but I dismissed it as the mat is missing from under the rear shelf. But then I remembered there were some "spares" that came with the car. I checked a box and, sure enough, the insulation piece was there. :)

I've posted some pictures below (with brick paver background). An Ausmini member friend asked me to post pictures of his MK II Cooper S mat (timber deck background).

Hi Doug
I have just redone my fuel tank breather tubes and refitted the hessian material under the rear seat panel inside the boot. will send you a photo if I can work it out Lol.
The hessian as pictured in your above photo's was in very good order.
Would you know or did you find out the product that the hessian was coated with? (black on under side).
I am in two minds to re coat the hessian or leave it original.
Would you have any leads on where to get some pattens for the lower boot floor and more Hessian.
I'm planing on remaking the fire wall patten as well and I only have some same peaces left of the original.
Any help would be most appreciated.

The only technical information I have for the insulation under the rear parcel shelf is that it is 0.5" Rubber Backed felt. I don't know what product it was coated with. Personally I would leave yours as is, depending on condition. Once you play with an item it will never be totally original.

I haven't been able to locate any technical details on size and material for the insulation for the lower boot floor - part 24A81, unfortunately. A possible source of hessian is the underlay when someone is ripping up old carpet. You could try some carpet installers as they probably throw away what they remove.

Is it the internal sound insulation for the firewall (under the carpet) or the blanket that sits in the engine bay behind the master cylinders you are referring to?

I really do like that original look.
I had it put away in a box for a number years and its in very good condition.
An interesting project to re glue it back in place with the fuel tanks in but it all went really well.
I'm looking at remaking the blanket that sits in the engine bay behind the master cylinders.
I have a small piece of the original blanket that I'm going to try and match.
Would you know of any body who would have an original patten in which I could use?
I'm working on finding some more Hessian/felt as well.

Regarding the firewall blanket from what I have seen the earlier cars had a finer grain vinyl and later 68,69+(??) had the coarser finish v similar to premade ones you get now. The finer grain ones to me look a lot like what may have been used for soft top hoods or ute tray covers??

EDIT. looking back in this thread you will see photos of both types.

Thanks for the info and I have been searching through some of the past chat topics with great interest and this was one subject that I wanted to address.
Would you know of an original patten for the engine bay/fire wall blanket that I could use?
I'm just trying to finish some small detailing on the Cooper S that wasn't finished.

The shape/ a patten is what I'm after.
I have an old piece with the vinyl on it that I can use to match with some new vinyl.
