I'm having trouble with a door lock on a 1968 Cooper S (Aus model with wind up windows)
I purchased a handle/lock assembly without a key and I'm trying to remove the lock barrel so I can get the parts re-chromed. I've removed the split pin etc but unable to remove the barrell.

Any ideas?

You need the key to remove the barrel from the handle
have a look on the square shaft and see if there is a number stamped
this number will be the key number , which can be cut from a set of master keys
or a locksmith may be able to remove it for you

As Slacko says the lock must be undone to get it apart.
I took my spare handle to Mini King and trawled through their collection of keys until I found one that fitted.

I got a new (2nd hand) door handle and barrel which didn't have the key and was locked... used a piece of wire and a small screwdriver to unlock it, took about 5 minutes of jiggling and i've never picked a lock before (i swear officer! hehe)

There's only 5 tumblers in the barrel from memory and it's not the most accurate style of lock. If you're local in sydney i can have a crack at it for you or you could just do as the other guys have mentioned and get a key cut to match your lock.

Having seen first hand how easy it is to get around these locks it's definately worth having a cutout switch or immobiliser of some sort!

The early locks are usually knackered by now, you rarely need anything sophisticated to pick them, in most cases any Mini key will open them with a bit of jiggling.

I would like to remove the drivers side key barrel but the above is of no help.

Is there a way to remove the barrel?

I do have the key but would to replace all the locks with the same barrel.

Knock the retaining pin out of the hole you see here close to the handle itself. The pin is out in this shot.

Ah, OK. I thought the pic of the handle above without escutcheon was yours. So yes, you need to have the lock picked to advance your work. If you can find someone with a supply of keys you will probably find one that opens the lock even though it is not the original key code. The locks wear sufficiently to enable that to happen in many cases. Otherwise it's off to a locksmith.

I'm not totally sure with Minis but with a lot of automotive locks you don't need the correct key to remove the lock, you just need a key, any key that fits the hole.

Morris, on a Mini you need to turn to unlock to retract the plunger or the escutcheon won't fit over it.
