That is a long way forward! I was way off. Old holes are going to stick out badly... Do any other styles fit where the old wide holes are?

I don't think you've shown us where the old holes are?

From the photos, I don't think the mirror is too far forward. Most factory/dealer-fitted mirrors were meant for that position. If you end up with 2 drilled holes they can be filled with small rubber plugs/grommets until you can weld them up and repaint the door.
And when locating a door mirror I have always tried to put it about the same distance from my eyes as the centre inside mirror is so that you can quickly scan from one to the other without refocusing.

I used these on my car. It does take a bit of patience to locate them perfectly but well worth it.
I have not had any problems in the 7 years they have been on and with a little polish still look like new.
They are the best mirrors I have ever had on a mini and compared to some out there give a great rear view.
I used the supplied plastic plinth and it's been fine. I'll see if I can find a pic of them fitted for you.
Ben.

My driver's door had a bunch of holes which the painter forgot to fill.
So I screwed a S/S screw into the spare front one. It doesn't look too bad. I can't fully open the wing window, but as doing this drags the rubber out I don't bother anyway.

After my mirror fell off the pathetic standard plastic base, I bought a replacement mirror, and the metal plinth kit CZH3521 from Karcraft. No problems since.

If I'm carrying on like a pork-chop, I'm having a great time.

If I go very quiet there's a very good chance I broke something.

What Doc said, if you don't use the plinth the mirror will fall off. Learnt from experience.

Especially if you "over tighten" the horizontal fixing bolt !
