someone please correct me if I'm wrong - the 54000 TRF damper kit come doesn't come with oil, does it... so something else to spend money on??

Mine came with a small bottle of oil. But it wasn't labled with the wt so I just bought some. I'm running 27.5wt or 310cst

I always had plenty of old oil here from other shocks - so I would guess you are correct!

does look like it..... sigh.... what oil should I get?

PDF parts list (handy) http://www.tamiyausa.com/pdf/pl/54000.pdf

in other news, if someone happened to be able to source a number of countryman, pickup and HPI-style mini shells for a reasonable price, how many people would want them?

Probably 40 weight is a good place to start. I think it is all I've ever used. Others mix front and rear with 35, 30 or even 25. But I've never really worried a great deal about it.

I could be tempted to acquire a Countryman if the price is right ;)

40wt is where you start. I use Team Associated oil, and keep all your oils from the same manufacturer if you decide you wanna play with them ($5 a bottle, which lasts many many changes). I only ever go down to 30wt at the front if it's bumpy. Albury I ran 40wt front and rear.

I'd also be tempted if I could land one here for around $40.

what about a HPI style shell? what do you reckon their real value is?

I reckon the cost of these shells is a bit off - pretend your local hobby shop has a ready supply of your favourite bodyshell, what do you think is a fair price?

If it was from the local Hobbyshop I would expect/hope to pay around $30. My personal opinion is that it is still expensive, but there isn't a huge market for these things. We also need to remember that although the local hobby shop may be a little more expensive, they have the knowledge and experience to go along with the product. (its the same as the local mini part suppliers).

I managed to buy two Blitz GTI bodies landed at my door for $55. That means $27.5 per body, Thats the cheapest I've found so far.

do standard m05's have a problem with grit getting into the gearbox?

Step 6 of the build manual shows putting some anti-wear grease on the top of the gearbox casing "to protect against sand and dust".

I missed this step in the first build which was why grit got in there, and back at the track today it started making noise and got notchy and there was junk in it again...

I cleaned it all out and put the chassis together with no gearbox internals. I shook some talc on it, and sure enough when I took it apart it was inside - and a lot of it.

I hope someone at Tamiya got their arse kicked for that design flaw
