Hi all.
Is anyone running one of these mufflers?
I want to see how large they will end up looking at the bum of a Mini.

willy, I run an RC 40 on one of my cars (Mkll Cooper S) and, to be honest, I am very disappointed considering the premium that you pay for these mufflers. The traditional "raspy" Mini sound is missing and I certainly haven't noticed any improvement in performance. Yes, it looks traditional with its exit on the LHS so that aspect is not an issue. Unfortunately my car is hemmed in against a wall so I can't take pictures but it does look the goods.

In passing, I'm fairly confident that my RC40 is intended for a Mini, whereas the picture that you have posted appears to be very different. Firstly mine doesn't have those metal arms protruding either end of the box and, secondly, mine doesn't have the rolled end. It is just straight as per the old Lukey mufflers.

It does the job, the noise isn't anything too exciting at all, but it looks like it was always meant to be there.
I think that's the 2.25" ?

Looks like a rover muffler, so definitely for a mini.

Rover exhaust clamps are different to older minis

I run one on our mpi rover great back note, ours is full stainless

I would one before other check actual picture of item before buying some cheap and knocked out

We bought ours from minispeed uk, quality welds n stainless

I agree sounds like crap and will end up in the bin or on ebay.

No one has mentioned if they are running a single box or twin box RC40. I have tried both on my mini. The twin box RC40 is a quiet free flowing exhaust. The single box RC40 is a much better sounding exhaust that has a really great note.

My car runs a single RC40 box to the rear of the car and I stand by my earlier comments that it falls short of my expectations in terms of "note" and performance. The pictured item is not designed for an early model car and subsequent posts indicate that it is probably for the later Rover model. I will not buy another RC40 for my 1970 Cooper S.

What engine pipe (extractors) are you guy's using. I thought to get a good exhaust note from an RC40 you really needed to run the LCB for improved performance for both improved HP and sound ?

Speaking with slacko, he had the RC40 twin muffler exhaust and has now changed to to single muffler RC40 - much happier. He says that there's very little additional noticable exhaust noise from inside the car, though it has a much better note from outside.

I'm running a RC40 twin muffler exhaust with Maniflow 3-into-1 manifold. Very quiet, in fact too quiet - seems efficient, though a really unexciting note.

I also received the original muffler that came from the factory with my MkII Cooper S. Think it is a Lukey and sounded amazing - a really throaty, guttural tone. Unfortunately this has now rusted out.

For those that are not happy with the single muffler RC40 - exhaust note & performance - what is the best alternative out there?

I know Ric is running the LCB system, single box. Dreadful. The original muffler was far nicer. Having had a couple of minis in the past the Lukey (not Lucas Ric) is probably the best sounding muffler we have ever used. Straight through single box, looks very similar to an original back box, but the sound is perfect. Hills did a direct copy which was also very very good. They do come up for sale every now and then, and if you go to an older muffler shop you could probably find one quite easily.

Anyone have experience using an OEM from a different car? Exhaust shops are full of new OEM zorsts from cars that have been upsized. I line the ford ute ones as they fit nice and flat under the wheel well.

Anyone else got suggestions?

How long have the Lukeys been out of manufacture? I seem to remember a few new ones floating around.

It looks like it really comes down to preference. I've been very happy with my twin box RC40 exhaust. Better note, and while it may be a bit louder at idle, it has more of a smoother, deeper note at highway speeds, and doesn't sound like a motorbike in 3rd gear like the stock muffler did.

My only issue would be that it doesn't fit as well as I would like with the twin box, as it sits in the exhaust tunnel the first box required a bit of maneuvering to stop it from rubbing against the hand brake cables. Also the LCB's I have aren't great on a 998 - the y-piece is the lowest part of the car.
