Just had a look at what our 4th month 1970 build Mini K has, we have had it from new. looks the same as number 3 version but to my surprise when I rubbed off a bit of the grease and crud it has RYCO cast into the filter head. Always thought it had a Purolator filter. Apart from the name it looks the same as the Purolator one in pic 3.

What diameter is the filter bowl, Drewie? All the Ryco one's I've seen are about 85mm diameter, whereas the Purolator ones are around 75mm.

I guess if one of the imported Cooper S motors arrived in Aust with a damaged Purolator filter housing, it may have been cheaper/easier for BMC to replace them with a local Ryco one. . .

It's been easier for quite a while to get the larger filter (and in principle not a bad idea to use given the larger surface area). It may have been swapped out for these reasons by any owner.

RYCO R2053P filters are readily available. However they don't allways come with the correct rubber seals etc. The original R2053V felt element doesn't appear to be available anymore.
Some had the wrong size square section O ring for the bowl to head and the last ones I bought didn't have the correct rubber seal for the bolt washer that fits up against the outside of the bowl. It was too thin and I needed 2 and some Stag jointing paste to get it to stop leaking around the bolt.
The aluminium filter bowl uses a different setup and the flat rubber washer for the bolt in the kit seems to be the type needed for this type of bowl.
I can't remember if the outside seal for the pressed metal bowl was originally a flat rubber washer or an O ring. (Senior moments now occur more frequently)

it was a thick square sectioned rubber washer

The MiniMan,
Thats good to know.
Seems my memory isn't quite as bad as I thought.
A second of doubt crept in momentarily though.

Whilst browsing through some BMC Australia Technical Bulletins I came across the following in C57/1968:

The oil pressure differential switch has been deleted from the oil filter head commencing at engine numbers:

Mini Deluxe - 9YA/Ta/H 34264
BMC Moke - 9YB/U/H 1173
Mini Minor - 9YE/U/H 3150
Morris 1100 - 10Y/Ta/H 67149
Morris 1100 S - 12YD/Ta/H 9645

Oil filter assembly with switch part AYG63 (head only HYL3421)
Oil filter assembly without switch part AYG0135 (head only HYL3819)

Just borrowing this thread.

I have a late MK1 S with the above filter housing.
The filter element that I pulled out was the shorter R2053P Ryco at 83mm long.
Most of the mini specialists are selling GFE478 / GFE103 which are 88mm long and cross ref is R2180P Ryco.
Has anyone had any issues in the 5mm increase in length?
The 83mm long element has plenty of spring pressure as it is.

Sure have a prob. dropping out the can in recent oil & filter change no way would it go back! I eventually found the thread was stripped in the puralator. Removed puralator, cleaned up the stripped lower end of the female thread, removed lower metal washer & got JUST enough grip to put it all back together & suffer a small leak under pressure. Grrr...

I found a mate with a spare puralator, phew.

Bloody Minis - I'm sure we are NUTS to love 'em :!:

Hi All,
What was the original oil filter for a 1969 Australian Cooper S?
Was it the small diameter tin can type?
Or did they have the aluminium can?
Did the head have the oil filter bypass switch (that was not wired up)?

Thanks in advance.

There is a considerable set of information on pages 44 and 45 of the Mini Kingdom (printed) catalogue (1998-1999). Thanks to John Smidt.

I'm off to Historic Winton race meeting right now but will post those pages later if no-one else does. :)

David is right - it's a great summary of the alternatives.
