Im getting my engine rebuilt within the next two weeks.

I am wondering if it is possible for a mini odometer to b wound back ? and if so, is it still illegal even though its being done because of a rebuild ?

Even if it is illegal....anyone tell me how to wind it back ?

yes it is illegal even if its rebuilt, just becuase the engine is new dosnt mean the rest of the car is so must show original kms...

now thats been said you can wind it back :D but i think its easier to pull the speedo all apart and place the numbers back to what you want, ive never done it but have heard it being done

You could just get your engine rebuilder to put the kms on the recipet of rebuild so the next owner knows how many kms since last rebuild.

Don't bother trying to wind it back with a drill, doesn't work on Mini ones..
The odometer is driven by a ratchet & pawl mechanism, so even if you spin the cable backwards it will still ratchet the counter forwards.
I guess you could keep going forwards to 99999.9, 00000.0! 8)

BTW when my Mk1 S speedo was overhauled by Olympic Instruments years ago, it came back reading 00000.0

Thats right, it is illegal to wind the odometer back. Nothing to say you can't wind it forwards though

When I bought my speedo, it was really dirty, so I disassembled it, cleaned it all, and reassembled it with 00000.0km on the odometer. The speedo in SC850 now reads 1.6km - thats the total distance the car has been pushed in and out of the garage..

Its very easy to do, but it is illegal for me to say how... so I wont say.

There is a loophole in the laws - if your speedo is faulty it MUST be replaced. The new speedo will have a much different reading.

A friends Holden Calais had 250,000km on the clock when he bought it. It had 105,000km on the clock when he sold it - the original speedo died

My Mazda's speedo died and needed replacing last year too..

Question. My odo doesn't work at all. The last reading when I registered the mini last year was 79746. The reading that it will read this year when I take it to get registered will be 79746. Will i get arrested?

How do I make it work again?

You can always say that it hasnt moved from your garage all year :D

Why is it not working?? cable pronlems?

Does the odo click over in reverse? If not you've done twice that distance SC!

i just put a new cable on, and it still doesnt spin when im driving forward
also the speedo doesnt work, as the cable doesnt turn at all

few questions:
a) does it still click over if not in gear?
b) how does it work
c) how do i fix it?

a+b) it is driven by the diff end of the gearbox. When the wheels turn, so does the cable, regardless of what gear you are in. It spins much slower than your wheels do.

c) Make sure the end of your old cable still has the end on it.... it could have snapped off inside the hole in the gearbox!! (it has happened to me) Take both your cables and compare the ends of the inner shaft. They should be identical.

If the end is missing on your old one...... good luck getting it out of the drive hole!!! Not an easy job with the engine still in the car.

Yep... they are connected, if your speedo works your odo should aswell. Whenever I take my dash off it always pops out a little so I have to open/flip the bonnet and push the cable in a little from outside.

good to know that its driven even with out the car in gear.. but it makes total sense.. say if you're rolling down a hill in neutral you would want to see the speed....
something being lodged inside the drive didnt occur to me, i am miffed that i didnt check it before i dropped the lump in

i'll have to remove the radiator to get to it...

Yeah, its a tricky angle. You'll need double jointed fingers.

Would be very easy to get to with the radiator out, but pulling a bit out of that hole will still be tricky. You will want to use a very fine hook.

If you've got car ramps, it COULD be easier to drive it up on them before trying to get to it.... from underneath. Make sure the engine is cool before doing this though. The driveshafts might be in the way though.

Pulling a broken bit out of the drive hole is one of the hardest things to do with the engine in. Removing the speedo drive gear assembly would help. It is removable by undoing the (7/16"??) bolt that is directly under the cable drive hole. This will allow you to remove the retaining plate, then pull out the drive gear and pinion. The drive hole is in the end of that pinion.

Your engine will lose oil when you remove this bit. I only reccommend doing this if you plan on doing an oil change at the same time.
