Any tips for removing the outer race of the wheel bearings from the swivel hub?

Also, any ideas on taking of crusty old oil seals? :D

Use a brass or copper drift and tap them out with a hammer whilst supporting the hub on a couple of blocks of wood or in a vice - there is usually two grooves on either side of the bearing spacer to get you started , just do a little tap on each side at a time and then move on around in a circle swapping sides after each tap !

Oil seal can be flicked out with a screwdriver or cold chisel & BFH. It'll come out anyhow with the outer bearing. :wink:

I had a hell of a time removing the inner part of the bearing if the drive flange once.
I had to hold the drive flange upright in the vice and place a small cold chisel between it and the seal collar and tap ( sometimes hard ) the chisel while pushing back on the
flange and inner part of the bearing.
Got there in the end but you have to be carefull not to mark the drive flange too much with the chisel.
From what ive seen score marks are sometimes on the flange from previouse bearings
that have spun when collapsing.

I've found the most painless way to get inner rings off the drive flange stub is grind it as far as you dare with an angle grinder, then spit it with a cold chisel and BFH.

If badly worn where the bearing fits, don't use it- go find another that's better.. :wink:

Get a "bearing splitter" to get the inner race of - It is invaluable.
I just got blank stares from most of the di#$heads at the local car places when I was trying to buy one in a hurry when I had a mates car in peices.
It looks like two blades that come together when the bolts are tightened and it gets you just enough clearance to get a bearing puller on there.
The right tools save a helluva lota agro and they are only about 20 bucks
