MK2 S and Mini K were bent, black.
MK1 S and Mini Deluxe were straight, chromed.

997-998 Cooper were straight, black. I think..

I wanted to do this too. Can I just cut it off and then have to re-thread the gear stick end? Can it be re-threaded in the car or does it need to be removed to re-thread? Im sure I can borrow the threading thingy ;)

Easiest to take it out of the car. Just undo the cup thingy at base of gearstick.
You will probably need to machine the end of the stick back down to 3/8"? before cutting the thread. Or, find a bolt the right size, weld it on and dress the weld.

Another way (better) is cut it a bit lower down, take 2" or whatever out and reweld the top threaded part back on. Done properly, it will look mint.

My gearknob has a sleeve inside it which slides over the gearstick and the knob has 3 grub screws to hold it on.
