Yes the 1500 CV joints are longer at the stub axle end,,, but i wouldn`t put the spacer on the innner end as that waould space the CV centre inwards of the central position where it`s meant to be,,, cornering will then creat some chunkyness

We grind the hub out a bit to allow clearance for the CV bell & put the spacer on the outside of the wheel brgs

easy-peasy :-)

I actually have 2 brand spanking new original old stock genuine Morris 1500cv joints here as well as 2 brand spanking new Maxi 1750 inner pot joints

:-)

:-)

No ,,, you can`t have them ,,, sorry... they`re going into my speedway car
:-)

Yep I agree that it positions the CV in the wrong position but I didn't want to grind my hubs (didn't actually think of it) so have placed the spacer on the inside and had no problems, car has done 20k+ kms since fitted.

It is a valid point, but i from the people i have spoken to that race, there does not seem to be any inherent weakness with the mini disc cv's and after analysing the last axles i broke the we just far too soft and not of the right material and most importantly designed wrong.

We used 4130 (i think) that GR's dad purchased in the 1950's and i'm willing to test whether the they are as strong as i think they are :P

The tires will give in long before the shafts...(i hope)

yeah sorry miniMad... my main point was to upgrade the axles to morris 1500 ones & in doing so you can obviously use the larger CVs too

No need to be sorry, i understand that bigger is stronger. Whether or not it is required in this case i am not so sure yet.

GR made a set of axles for someone who raced minis and was always breaking mini shafts. After his shafts were installed he hasn't broken one since and this particular racer has a habit of doing high rpm clutch dumps with 8" wide slicks.

Ah bugger...

I think I will stick with Mini CVs for simplicity and if they do break, then upgrade later.

Back to the engineering firm...

<edit> Actually I'll have a think about this over the next few days. I imagine all I need to make the CVs fit is a 3/8" wide that fits on the CVs shaft that is the same diametre of the "step" on the CV. Sorry don't know what it's called...

Has anyone got a photo of the two (i.e. mini and 1500 CVs) side by side?
How much bigger are they? And more importantly, how available are they?

It would be a piece of piss for me to install them in my Morris 1100, I assume I could just use the whole 1500 upright. But if I can't get joints to go in them, it's of little value.

Assuming you make your shafts strong enough to cope and you start breaking cvs, at least mini ones are common enough.

Here is a photo of a mini, 1500 and Subaru CV's showing the different lengths. I recently installed some 1500 CV's in my race car after breaking several sets of axles and haven't had any breakages since. I used the 1500 CV's in combination with Subaru drive shafts (same spline as the 1500 these also have the advantage of being much stronger than the 1500 axles). The only difficulty with using 1500 CV's is that they are hard to get. I did see a thread on this site that suggested that Hyundai Elantra CV's may fit however I haven’t checked this out as yet.

Details of the conversion can be found on my web site (sorry one of the images is missing, broken link or something, I will have to investigate it and fix it up)

There was a problem with the link I gave in my previous post. This has now been fixed. Click on this one
