Thanks Simon.

I've yet to dismantle the whole setup and check it all. The brakes are purported to be only 500Km old, and they certainly look OK so far, but having sat for some time, they'll still be a full strip, check and re-build job.

I'll certainly be looking at getting the balance right, as I have no wish to emulate your feat.

BMC didn't build boosted S brakes because Timo or Paddy had weak legs.

After blowing a booster during a hillclimb (big time excitement) I bypassed the booster while waiting for the repair bits to arrive. i was glad to get it back to the way it should be.

If you want to compare, first find a big hill and a Mini with boosted discs. Drive half way down normally. The, turn off the engine and coast the rest of the way, using the brakes to slow for the corners.

Then decide.

Cheers, Ian

I don't have a booster or disks and I pull up just fine. Booster is only great if you have bad knees or something cause it makes the pedal easier to press in. Only time you need a booster IMO is when doing a full, back to factory restoration project.

I ran a VH44J booster on the Clubby automatic with 998 discs on.
(yeah it was a bitsa...)
It needed the booster, the tiny pads were Metal Kings, only decent ones I could get back then.

We currently run 2 Minis with S disc brakes and no booster. One is the wife's. Both stop fine with EBC Greenstuff and Blackstuff pads.

IMO whether to boost or not depends on your pad selection- some pads take a LOT of effort to make work.

Just replaced the pads and discs on the clubby (8.4s) as they were dying. And after bleeding it and everything I took the car for a test drive and a decnt shove of the brake pulls up the very, very quickly - just the way I like it.

Some people like it, some don't. I prefer to know I don't have ram my foot in an emergency, but I can understand for racing purposes, you could accidently lock the wheels up.

I'm still, always for boosted. As when we bought the clubby it didn't have a booster and my mini always has. I had gotten used to it. And prefered it.

I guess it boils down to personal opinion, and your preferred braking 'experience'.

I have S discs, no booster, great pedal feel, stops quickly and not too much effort. (more than a boosted car of course  )

You don't need one, i'd say it was the same pedal pressure required as with the drums. Didn't like the 'feel' of boosted s discs.

Like I said, personal experience.

Good luck with it!

Matt
