Hi all, I am going to get my rods lightened and heat treated.
Before I do this i need to get the little end bushes out. I am going to renew them anyway but is there a good way to get them out and install them? or do I have to send it to a pro?

On a side note, There was a 15 gram difference between my conrods. spose thats another big thumbs up to the BMC team

when I tell the guys to machine 0200" of the sides of my rods do I tell them to do only the middle portion? by that I mean not the outside of the little and big ends? Mr Vizard is very clear on alot of things in his book except conrods so it seams.

Most metal gets machined off the sides of the big ends. I wouldn't touch the I-beam part, it's highly stressed.
As for getting the bushes out, use a press, or a nice square vice and a pair of suitable sockets.

it was not VIzard that said about grinding it off the h beam part. I interpreted it from this http://www.minimania.com/ArticleV.cfm?DisplayID=1881 article. Vizard yellow book, 2nd edition pages 353,354,355. Appon further inspection, I have noticed that the beams just have the casting dags off. From what I can now gather I have to send it to shop to have big end milled down to approx the width of beam of the conrod, well almost I will have to leave a lip where the bearing sits in the rod so its the same diameter as the bearing shell. Roughly how thick does this need to be? From the photo in the top left hand corner of page 354 I am assuming its around 2mm. As for the little end most of this metal would come from around the outer edge. Its all comming together now,

I did this mod to my S rods for the stroker.
I made these 4mm, Graham Russell makes them about 3mm.
2.0mm is too thin, IMO.
You turn them on a lathe by holding the assembled rod bore in the chuck, or on a mandrel..

1. Radius and polish any sharp machined edges you've created, lengthwise on the rod. NEVER across it.
2. Balance them within 1g.
3. Check them for straightness. I bet they ain't.
4. Use decent bolts, not the stocko ones. Either ARP bolts or Unbrako Grade 12 socket head capscrews are good.
5. Bin the locktabs, they are crap steel these days- they settle under load then the bolts come loose.

are they able to be straightened? or are they binned? Should I have them shot peened before I work them up of after?

You need to know the steel specs of the rods, I'd ask GR as I know he had a whole bunch done once.

So should I have them heat treated before I have them straightened but after I have them lightened?

Yes.

Whether you need to heat treat them depends how much you are going to rev it. For 7500 or so, no need to, IMO.

Thats what I thought too, about heat treating that is. I will polish em up all nice and only rev it to 7grand anyways.
