hey guys is having a rear sway bar fitted make that much difference ive been told that it does what are your opinions. plus where are they mounted photos would be good to.

Not worth a pinch of poo in my opinion, i had one on my cooper s & in motorkhana's it used to lift the inside wheels off the ground about 6 inches, took it off & it returned to it's nice flat handeling.

It does keep the exhaust pipe from falling on the ground.



and makes lifting rear wheels easier. For normal road use you may notice a slight reduction in understeer, if the rest of the geometry is set up properly.

They do look cool, I must admit that.

I find that a lowered, slightly, mini with wide wheels and tough shocks (spax or koni say) handles pretty awesome. For the road, I have track tested my old setup and it didn't body roll, but the back end kept sliding around fast corners, tight corners. This was on a hillclimb event.

New wide wheels and tyres grip much better.

A rear bar won't stop the rear sliding, all it does is add roll stiffness so the car is less inclined to lift the inside front.
On the other hand one could argue that using the bar to lift the inside rear on corners will displace fluid from rear bag to the front, causing MORE body roll...

lol thats why u would have hydro in it as well lol, i dont see the point minis were designed on the basis that they basicly almost had no body roll, my mini was lowered when i bought it and it handled like a dream but its as rough as its ever gonna get so i had to lift it now it feels like its gonna roll sometimes ( use to the lowered feeling)

Hmmm...lots of opinions, no actual experiences?

On the raod? Nah don't think it makes a difference - of if it does it's because you're driving like an idiot.

However on-track I think it makes a great deal of difference. I have driven my car both with and without a rear bar on the same track (the only good comparison) and was able to get power out of the corner far earlier with the bar in place. So much less roll, more stability. Even on really bad tyres I was basically able to get controllable oversteer.

Ask Mason if he shows up in here - last day at Taupo I'm the first to admit he had more horsies down the straigth, but the corners were a different story...[/i]

With the stuff above , who's running dry and who's hydro as most hillclimbers I've spoken to say good for hydro but not really for dry ???

One scary one - 1968 Std. Mk 1 S with rear sway bar, full bore into Devil's Elbow (old Mt Barker Road, Adelaide) lifted off mid corner slightly, car does a complete 180 facing oncoming traffic!

And I was only 18 (as the song goes).

So I don't think they are safe in the hands of a novice.

You got that stu you were cleaning me up on the hairpin and sweeper.I would like to say that the car was at fault for me but most likely im lacking talant.But i am looking into a rear bar for my car too do you now of any for sale

I'm just waiting to see what my WoF guy says I went through the rules and in THEORY it's ok as I made no modifications to the suspension or chassis to fit it (holes were already there from previous installtion when I put it through LVV), but you never know. Worst case scenario I take it off until track day, like I said, not needed on the road.
Sure you can buy mine....for a price
