Hello ALL, I havent any experience on minis but i want my 74 panel van to go faster.Is there any mods i can do without it costing me a fortune????? :D :oops:

LOL well on a more realistic note... No :cry:

You could get extractors, performance exhaust, free flowing head, lotsa stuff... but really none of it is 'cheap'.

performanze = $
mini's with some head work cam extractors zaust and carbi upgrade will give ya some go but then all of asudden yagot this great top end and the bottom end lacks so then ya go for bore pistons crank grind and a box rebuild hmmm oh thats right you wanted cheap :(

What size SU does it have?

You want some bolt on goodies. You want some LCB (long centre branch) extractors and a 1.75" exhaust system (1.75" is optimum for a Mini). You will also want atleast a single 1.5" SU.

The next step is head work and a cam.

What size engine is the car? Is it well tuned at the moment?

Cheap mods would be:
Nissan distributor will cost you about 35 bucks and get you better spark.
1.5 SU's can be had fairly cheap if you've only got a 1.25 on it at the moment
if you have the stock inlet/exhaust manifold you'd probably wanna go to a decent split system but thats a couple hundred.
Beyond that you pretty much go for head work and get the head flowing better.


You're cooling and brake systems also need to improve as you squeeze more power out of the car as well so don't forget them.

I've had a really cool idea on making a quick van. Put a Porsche motor and transaxle in it and leave the A series in the front to keep the wheels on the ground. Or maybe a Renault 5 Turbo? Now that one would definitly go in. I will now return to reality and build a rotisserie for the van.

I know that alot of people will have a go at me for this, but, the best performance mod i did was to go and do a few advanced driving courses, it made a big difference in how i drive and my abilty to make the car go faster, and it's a cheap mod in the scheme of things.

Everyone should do an advanced road craft course. The problem after the course is maintaning the skills learnt. If the car control skills are not used then they cease to be a skill, so to speak. I'm an old codger and when I first started driving I knew it all and as far as I was conserned was bullet proof. After I wrote off two cars and had numerous smashes along with one loss of license I still hadn't learnt. I then did a road craft course and the carnage stopped and my attitude changed. I didn't realise it at the time but it can be seen now. I do not think high performance and how to drive faster courses are the answer, they are for racing drivers. The aim of both types of course is totally different .

Post some pics of the rotisserie when you've built it. I'll be needing one for my van, and interested in how you manage it. The obvious mounting points at the rear are the van hinges, which should keep it fair square. Maybe an X-piece in the middle too?

PS One of my clients reckoned he and his mates mid-mounted a V8 in a mini van with tubbed out wheels and a roof scoop (as opposed to a hood scoop) back in th' day but I have a feeling I'd need to see proof... but he came up trumps with some tasty headlights (brand new) which take H4 halogen bulbs, so can't speak too bad about the guy.

Granted, but i think to really understand how to drive properly, advanced driving courses, not one but a number of them, relating to varying technical skills is very important. My dad, years ago wouldn't let me get my license without attending one, i have since done a number of courses, and have a very good working knowledge on how to drive a car safely and also do it at speed if needed. I have also taken up motorkhana's to increase my knowledge on car control as well as have a bit of fun. It isn't always about power, it is however all about car control and driving courses help in this area alot.

Freinds and I use to find a nice large patch of grass somewhere (clover patch near Makka's place and do figure 8's continualy. The best part it had a Cricket pitch right in the centre. The aim was to get it total sideways with the back wheel down the length of the pitch.
I would not recomend it nowadays as the cops are more agressive with the fines and points but it did teach us throtel (Spelling) control and what to do when you loose it. Yer of course we also did it in the rain aswell but always ensiring no one else was around. We never bent a Car. We were silly but safe :wink:

And this was during our rear wheel days, Not to say I don't do it any more would be a wrong of me :?

Hm, Kiandra mid winter back in the 70's. We arrived to find we were to early to get into the pub where we were staying so had to amuse ouselves. Someone came up with the idea of "how many times can you spin a car across the nearby bridge". The amazing thing was nobody bent their car! A mate of mine driving an 1100s won from memory.

The CHEAPEST way to get a mini to go faster is not to add bits, but take some away. :lol:
Remove pretty much everything you don't need - carpet (weighs a ton), door cards, boot lining, removing seats. If yr serious, loose the roof lining. You could try drilling excess non essential metal away, like parts of the inner door skin, & remove the pockets, but don't compromise strength! Never fill your car up, $10 fuel doesn't weigh as much, and if you like to gamble, leave your spare tyre at home! :twisted:
