well i've come to the conclusion that my engine doesnt actually sound that bad, and i would be able to hear it more often if i wasn't hearing my gearbox whine and carry on, is there anyway i can shut that baby up?

i would have thought just some basic sound deadener all over the firewall and cover up every hole i can find.. but im sure there's someone else out there who's done something.. any ideas?

otherwise i'll headdown to clark rubber or wherever and purchase some sound deadener.

Shouldn't whine too bad if box is in good nick. Maybe its idler (or other) bearings are on the way out... but early boxes do whine more in 1st gear than the 4 synchro ones.

I got nothing under the carpets... all that stuff just adds weight and holds water....! :P

Try speaking in a stern voice to it, if that don't work, turn off the engine and coast?

PUT SOME SAWDUST IN THE oil filler, and then sell her....
Na dont do that. Can u pin where the noise is comming from, i would say it is the baring that houses the sprocket from the crank to the box it self.

i dont think it's fcuked up, pretty much every old car i've been in makes that noise, just like the gears going up and down.. .. like as the revs get higher the noise pics up in pitch, then it starts again as u change gear.

How hard is it to rebuild the gearbox if you get a full gear set?

I just rebuilt Baracade's MK2 S box after it lunched 2nd gear..
Including taking the motor off it & putting back on, it's around 10 hours work to do it all properly- ALL bearings including the idler and outrigger replaced. 8)

<edit> New bearings, gears etc cost a serious amount of $$ now- even baulk rings are $30 each!
And we found no NEW 2nd gears in Sydney, to go with the new S cluster gear- I had to use a good 2nd hand one out of my Mini-K box...

I was thinking of rebuilding a rod change gearbox to cooper S ratios - is it just a matter of using standard mini gears and S's 1st and laygear?

You are nearly right....
Only ratio differences in the 4 synch boxes (pre-A+) are:
S 1st motion shaft has 18T not 17T,
S laygear has smaller diameter at the top gear end to mesh with 1st motion shaft.
1st, 2nd, 3rd gears are physically the same, but the laygear spins slightly faster on an S. Hardly worth the trouble unless the old ones are busted.

i think u people got the wrong idea. the gearbox isn't screwed, it's just making that noise when u rev it gets higher in pitch etc. very basic noise, nothing major :)

What type of oil are u using.

If the gearbox isnt bugered, the oil may be a little thin, or not coating the gears properly.
Try using a oil stabiliser, eg moreys or lucas.
Give this a go it may help and wont hurt anyways.

Peace
