`Weld thru' primer is still surface contamination. The zinc tends to make the arc fierce. As said above, solvents and paint are all bad news when the arc hits them- clean steel makes for clean welds.

<edit> BTW, I am a qualified welder... amongst other things!

Good to meet you at the show and shine in Canberra by the way. Cheers Doc glad someone could give me a definitive answer as there were two opposing arguments. Well should have the subframe finished by this weekend (got a fair amount done tonight) :P

Cheers

Matt

Hey Matt, got a spare bedroom??

The Dr has just got to take 1293 Barney on a long run to blow the cobwebs out!! (you know how bad those cobwebs can be in Minis Doc  )

Ideal opportunity to check out a few of the Mini projects in Canberra  .....just a thought!!

Yeah Barney's 1293A+ motor has 11 year old cobwebs in it..
Just kidding.
It's done 5000 miles up to then, since I got it I've fitted new rimflow valves, unleaded seats, ported it a bit more, fitted Viton valve stem seals, new timing chain, and a pair of HS4s (thanks, Baracade!) with S/S (bling) heat shields. Cam is a Tighe 104. 1.5 rockers are `coming soon'
Going back onto a proper Mini-K remote gearbox tomorrow, then I can pull this bastard rodchange (they all are!) out of there! :x
Mini-K gears & 3.647 diff... it should haul ass off the line.. :P

BTW to all....VITON is nasty nasty stuff if it BURNS....releases a gas that eats flesh to the bone!!!

BBTW does anyone think the pain of fitting heatshields (loss of access) would be eased by getting your extractors surface coated??? From what I have seen (limited) products like JETHOT seem to improve thermal efficiency and therefore tend not to radiate so much heat (of course, what I have just postulated could be pure bullshit!! )

Mick,
Viton is pretty commonly used for seals- it doesn't go hard real quick like the 1275 ones do. Metro ones not much better.
I brought these Viton ones in from the US, so they must be good!
