My matic shell is going to be repaired soon but I have a question.

I've seen some minis that have steel wheel arch flare supports which are just much longer extension of the usual lip around the edge of the wheel arch.

I'm going 12 x 5s with 1" spacer drums on the rear and stock 8.4" discs on the front.

So, which cars had these steel flare supports?
Which flares require this bit so that they can attach?
Should I mod my shell to have these?

and finally, why does everyone hate those black plastic Rover flares so much....?

because they came on everything and dont really have any style and they look like black plastic. i dont think they are that bad but there are better ones out there like group 2's or even the rover style group 2's.
the arches your talking about came out normally on cooper's and clubbies. you can make up the metal supports for them quite easily.

I have a 70 `Matic with S disc brakes and Mini offset 10x5 Contessas.
Yes it has the much hated plastic Innocenti/late UK flares on it. Why?
1. I didn't want to butcher the body by sticking the sheet metal on for Oz S flares.
2. S flares are flimsy as hell, expensive, and then you need the crap plastic trim to hold them on. More $$. These shrink in sunlight from day 1.
3. I happen to like black plastic flares on a red car.
4. If I want to take them off later, there's only a few tiny holes to fill. No metal to get rid of.
5. If I break one, they are available new singly, cheap.

So the steel arch extensions are only for Aus Cooper & GT flares?? Not needed with other flares?

They were used on Oz Cooper S, Clubman GT, Mini S, SS, and LS.
I think similar were used on South African GTS.
Never used on UK cars.

I think it gets down to whether you want to have a solid base for flares or you just want to drill rust forming holes for self tappers in your guards

No rust here- I used small S/S self tappers and gobs of HTB grease.
Don't use the standard Inno screws, they will leave rust marks the first time it rains.

Doooooooooc...HTB grease is gunna get washed away when Sydney eventually gets rain and the guard will rust.......away from your stainless screws

No worries- got can of fish oil handy. Marvellous stuff.
Anyhow, with Oz flares, those lousy metal strips will rust worse if you don't watch how you fit them on.
I know this, as I peeled them off Anton's 850....

i think the flares i put on my car are very good as far as not destroying nice guards etc. They have the sheet of metal that extends from the guards lower lip, just drill a few holes into it and pop rivet on (the chrome strip already needs holes drilled through this so it didnt bother me).

Then pop rivet the flare onto the metal sheet.

You make it sound like these metal sheets are a bad thing? or did you mean a different sort?

im not sure what they're called. they are fibre glass.
