While driving last night i had a few gear changes where it felt as if there was a slight catching of teeth as it went in..
This was on relatively slow changes - no flat changes..
Only just but would this be a sign of immenent failure ahead :(

Am getting my sc 12 kit dropped of today :D so am wondering if it does start to let go should i rebuild or get something stronger. I don't really want straight cut as they are so noisy (though they sound sweet as), or a 1275 box maybe?

Am assuming it's probably a standard 998 box as this is what the engine is in her (remote change).
I know there are a few kits out there now, so how have u guys found your boxes holding up..?

If any one has rebuilt one what range of price should i be expecting (if most other components are ok).
Also what price for a stronger box if this would be the way to go.

Cheers,

Carl

Is it a 3 synchro or 4 synchro- the 4 is stronger. 8)

If you are going to S/C it I'd definitely strip it, replace ALL the bearings, layshaft, baulk rings if worn, and synchro hub springs.
Check the shift forks for wear and replace if more than 1mm side play.
Also inspect the mainshaft nose where the needle bearing runs.

You can get a `bearing kit' from Karcraft or Heritage MG that saves you a few bucks, but note you will also need 2 idler gear bearings as they are not in kit.

thanks doc- ur straight onto it as usual!
3 or 4 shyncro??
not sure of that.. 1st gear has it if thats what u mean..
Suppose i have to pull the donk out then hey, wonder how long she'll last. i'm running a little short of funds atm. I'll just have to take it easy for a while till i can afford it.
Any idea of cost doc? I should be able to do most of it myself as far as getting it out etc. but have never pulled a mini gearbox apart b4.
I'll get my old boy to give me a hand as he's an ex. mechanic. & had a mini the uk (years ago)
Anything special u could tell me before hand would be greatly appreciated.
