well I have a story for you all... most people are aware to some degree the work I've done on my engine but before that was even done it was a 1330 when i bought it and only changed the exhaust to a rc40 and 3-1 extractors , custom manifold and runnig only a 1.5 SU. fairly standard stuff really. However I pulled up at the lights next to one of them A3 audi turbo's I think they're "1.3" ? Anyways .... SEE YOU BY ..... I was like 3 car lengths ahead of them... Imagine the possiblies now with my balanced 1360 grins.

I like the point that you don't need a turbo, just a really well made NA 1275 rebored etc...

anyways that my 2 cents and a quick story

how do they balence them, i was told they drill holes in the bottom of the crank, cant see how this works

They drill holes in the apropriate bits but often it only needs a polish , just a matter of spinning something to see if it always stops spinning at the same point , if it does , the bottom is the heaviest , grind/polish/remove/drill a little metal off and do it again , still stops at the same point , grind a bit more off , when it stops at a different point each time then it's balanced . This is a very very basic version of what happens but you get the idea . If it's all nicely balanced then there will be less vibration through the crank and the bearings will be happier and you might pick up a smidgen more power .

if its only a smidge then its not worth to work and using their lathe, i guess :roll:

Crank balancing on a Mini is usually done by grinding or linishing one or more of the crankwebs.

Biggest bore for a Mini is/was offset bore to 74.7mm using Triumph 2.5PI pistons, but bores are pretty thin then.
Even 74.0mm pistons are not common now, in Oz anyway. We tend to bore to 73.0mm, then later 73.5, then next time either bin the block or sleeve it. :wink:

with stock 81.33mm stroke,
73.0mm bore = 1360,
73.5mm = 1400,
74.7mm = 1426cc.
