I was rummaging around all night searching through the crap that VicRoads post on their website to try and find some useful stuff. Most of it doesn't actually help me
at all. But from this i take it that i wont need a cat or a charcoal cannister.

From what i've read the only ADR's applicable start from 1969. I am unsure as to whether this is only for vehicles after 1969. If that is the case, where is all
the info for cars manufactured before then. I dont know.

Anyway your interperetation is always invited and what i'm after.


-The exhaust system must be fitted with an effective silencing device and all exhaust gases must pass through this device
-Vehicles manufactured to comply with emission control ADRs must have all pipes/hoses/valves/sensors/fuel and air control devices and any other emission
control equipment originally fitted by the vehicle manufacturer properly located and connected and not apparently damaged, deteriorated, altered in any
way as to appear ineffective.
-Crankcase ventilation recirculation equipment is required on petrol engine vehicles built after 1970.
-Replacement carburettors may be fitted to any motor vehicle provided the vehicle continues to comply with the emission requirements applicable to it

Does this mean vehicles without emission control ADR's (all before 1969) dont need any... :)
And by 'it' do they mean the vehicle??


-Nitrous Oxide Systems are not acceptable on motor vehicles used on the road.

Doh !!!! :( Still doesn't tell me whether i can have the bottle and lines but just not connected.

-Must be fitted with an effective wiper system.
-All motor vehicles manufactured on or after 1st September 1966 and required to be fitted with a windscreen wiper system must be fitted with an effective
windscreen washer system
-Vehicles required to comply with demisting provisions must have nescessary equipment present and operational.

Does this mean we dont need a demister?

-Vehicles manufactured from 1st July 1988 must be fitted with a functioning odometer and speedometer calibrated in km/hr
-The prescence of a compliance plate is not a requirement for the issue of a Certificate of Roadworthy
-Replacement Steering Wheels must not be less than 330mm in diameter

Does this mean that when the police pull us up and ask us how fast we were going we can say.... No?
And with the Complicance Plate, surely you would need one to actually register the car
And i love the small steering wheel!! :(


-The width of any replacement rim must not be more than 25mm greater than the widest wheel specified by the vehicle manufacturer for that model.
-The overall diameter must not be greater than 15mm than the largest diameter tyre specified by the vehicle manufacturer
-The maximum allowable track increase is
Front Axle 25mm
Rear Axle 50mm
-Re-drilling wheels hubs drums discs or axle flanges is not permitted
-Chromed wheels other than those chromed during manufacturing process are not acceptable
-Hub/Rim Spacers are unacceptable unless specified by the vehicle manufacturer

How wide were mini wheels originally 3"?? And we are all talking 6 and 7!!! And i think a lot of us are guilty of spacers once in our life

Mini wheels were originally 10x3.5, even on Cooper 997 & 998.
Cooper S here got 10x4.5, so did the Clubby GT, & Clubby S.
Spacers.... well the Cooper S and Clubby S and LS etc had a 1" spacer cast into the rear drums.
I have heard that if the spacer is screwed onto to the disc or the wheel, technically they don't class it as a `spacer'.

No ADR before 1969 so cars were basically whatever the manufacturer wished to sell. You don't even need seatbelts prior to 1/69.

No compliance plates were fitted on Minis until sometime in 1970.

Emission controls didn't appear on Minis until 7/76 with the introduction of ADR 27A. (Bloody air pump and associated crap). Before that you do what you like to the engine basically.

I was told by a VASS engineer you can have NOS as long as the bottle is disconnected in the boot.

A demister (or heater) is not required for cars built before 1/1971.

Rear seatbelts became std in Jan 1971, my MiniMatic (3/70) never had them (and still doesn't). No, I don't cart people in the back... :wink:
Compliance plates came out in Dec 1969.
