looked at a mini today and this was the engine in it. has done 20k
To me it sounds pretty hot and I think it is but curious as to what the people that actually know what all the words mean think?
Is that an expensive engine?
Is it one that is over worked and will die easiliy

Yep sounds like lots of work has been done to that engine! But then again without seeing what really is in there (or at least some reciepts) they can tell you anything. Yes probably was quite expensive to build.. If you don't thrash it everywhere and rev the tits off it each gear change, and you change your oil reguarly it shouldn't die easily.

Sounds like a good spec depending on how it was built and has been used since. Mini motors can wear quickly if not well screwed together, especially if used in any form of motorsport. Then again they can last years if driven and looked after conscientiously.

Gues it depends on how much the asking price is. To build a motor to this spec from scratch would cost more than 2k these days.

It sounds like someone is trying to sell my engine except i don't have the quickshift and i'm in the process of fitting the 45 weber.

Because it's virtually the same as mine in regards to headwork and other mods the jetting for the carby should be pretty close to what i need. Is there any way you can find out from Link what jets they used? It would save me a fair bit of stuffing around experimenting.

They're just a crap inlet manifold that is more restrictive than a standard 1.5"SU on a standard manifold. Might as well throw the weber away if you're gonna use one of those manifolds. A complete waste of time and money.

Engine would be worth no more than 2.5 grand, in my opinion.

Depending on the condition of the car, you would want to pay no more than 5 grand for one with a good body and good interior..... or maybe 3500 for one with an average body/interior

Always have cash in your pocket when you make an offer. Offer $1000 less than the asking price and point out all the faults in the car. Know the cost to repair those faults and use that to your advantage.


I bought a 63 mini a couple years ago - it had a perfect rust-free body with a hot 1310cc. The guy wanted $5000, I spent half an hour going right over the car and said "....look man, i'm sorry to waste your time, the car is honestly worth no more than 3 grand to me. I gotta fix this and this and this....." ......then turned away.

It turns out that he was short of money, nobody else had offered him anything, and he just had to sell the car, so he said " make it $3100, so I can have $100 for beer money, and its a deal"

Make it sound like you have some money, but dont really need the car and would be happy to walk away without it - call their bluff. You never know, they might counter your offer.
