I've been offered a complete 998 power unit out of a Clubman to put in my Mini. I've seen it running, since it is currently fitted to the car. The only problem is the clutch release bearing is noisy, and you can't select gears with the motor running. Is the a lying/cheating method to get the clutch working well enough to be able to test drive? I have a good rod box and Cooper S clutch sitting in the garage, but if the clutch and box currently attached is in good nick it would save a lot of effort. I'm thinking maybe just adjust the hell out of it and see. The bearing is noisy, but not grinding so there must be some life left in it!

Up to you Anto...dosen't sound three bad at all....clutches (whilst a pain) are relatively easy to fix....so then you would have a 998 plus box (which I would leave together if I were you. Does it blow smoke?? good compression??

A simple change over of the clutch cover may be good enough to get a test drive happening.....

If the bearing was broken it would stall the motor when you pushed the clutch in. If it is making a noise,then it is still prolly turning (for now) and a normal clutch adjustment should see it changing gears.

If the car hasn't driven for years you may find the driven plate is stuck to the flywheel.
Happened to me once- no way we could free it without stripping the clutch apart. Car had been parked 8 years though.

If its just the bearings its no problem at all the total parts costs is about 30 dollars and its a simple job. had mine fixed last week
