would this be impossible to get engineered? if i got a pair of the ones from Curley? i would think they'd be a far sight lighter than the stock steel ones...

A question best suited to an engineer if you know one , especially since the cost of getting them here only to be told no . I don't know the rules about fiberglass doors but there have been some used in kit cars etc , so there has been a precedence but the Engineer may want impact bars or something . They may also need a report from the manufacturer to say they are strong enough . They'd be nice and light and brilliant bragging rights , but if you left them as unpainted/weave you'd have idiots constantly trying to push on them to see if they "felt" like carbon fiber .....

yeah i know one :) just havent talked to him in a month or so :P will be getting back in touch as soon as i've saved some money for my gf...and can get back on track with the conversion...

i actually wanted to have intrusion bars but for some reason DoT doesnt like them...they said "if yer in a crash and we need to get you out of the car then the intrusion bar could get in the way"...personally i view intrusion bars as preventative measures...so you dont get so mangled...and if you are in a wreck that would mean cutting through intrusion bars to get you out i'd say you'd rather that they were there than not :P thats just me though...

if i went stock 850 (sliding window) doors then there's not much in the way of intrusion protection...just what? 2mm thick metal door skins...may as well not be there at all :P so compared to that carbon should actually be an improvement :P

yeah i will be very careful where i park this car anyway...gonna get carbon bootlid too if i can...carbon front, carbon doors, carbon bootlid...should save a fair bit of weight...not sure about weave showing yet...sure is bling...but might look a bit weird...even with a predominantly black colored car (as i have planned)...

Well I have just heard from the clubbie builders in QLD that the DOT up there is now requiring them to have there fibrglass panels tested before approval will be granted, last cost was about $600 to have a bit tested and I am guessing it would be about the same for carbon fibre. To be honest the weight saving you will get from carbon over normal Glass fibre is not very much and it is not very good for impact damage on panels.

No DOT likes side intrusion bars on a roll cge for road use but they may make you fit intrusions like they do to the late Rovers before they are happy, these ones fit inside the door

right...so just go glass instead of carbon? spose since i'm prolly gonna paint it anyway it would be more or less the same looks wise...but a helluva lot cheaper :P

I am sure the curly carbon stuff would be great and if you really want it get it but I like people to be aware of what is or could be required to meet the stupid rules that DOT can make you meet.

The other thing with carbon is its a specialist thing to repair if it does get damaged were glass is easy to repair and any boat shop can do it :D

Fit sliding window doors. Cut the buckets out. Use thinner glass.

no no...you've got me all wrong :) i appreciate the advice...just considering the options...personally i'd rather the carbon...but if its gonna end up costing $2000 for a pair of doors imported, tested and fitted...i really dont wanna go there :P just to save like 10kgs...if even that...

I highly doubt it would be approved.

Carbon Fibre bonnets are illegal due to the fact that it splinters in an accident, causing lots of nice injury causing bits and pieces.

So same would happen with doors I would assume.

The one thing to remember about all the curley carbon parts is that they are designed for the race track first.
Carbon fribre panels are as nearas dammit same weight as fibreglass but is stronger in its weave contrustion.
You could pimp put your car with all the carbon you can get, but any car I have seen with either fibreglass or carbon doors has always had a cage with a doorbar. They are not designed to take any sort of side impact and will crack. Its one of the weird things I had everything cut out of my doors and had the perspex windows bolted but because they were steel i I didnt need to fit a door bar!
Fit Fibreglass panels and put in Perspex windows (but not windcreen) it will cost less and sounds like you will have less hassle with DOT.

The carbon shouldn't spilnter, they have tryed to engineer that out but it will crack and once cracked its not as easy a fibreglass to repair.

i already have plans for a full chromoly cage for this little beastie...bolted to the same points in the car as the subframe bolts to...so having a cage is no problem at all :) infact i want it more for its rigidity adding properties than anything else...the added safety in a roll or other accident is just a bonus...

as for doors withstanding impact...the sliding window types are more or less just the doorskins...there's not much else to them...as i said i dont think they'd provide much in the way of protection if you were impacted from the side...

Are you going to also join the cage to the A and B pillars?
To be ulra trick also use the rear arches/suspension points, it means that you have to use a different fuel tank, but also means you could buy the curly carbon boot floor...

had considered this but it really depends on where i end up sticking the radiator...if it goes in the boot then i am gonna have to get a custom bootfloor anyway
