The new MX5 is a great car, I'd very much so call a MINI a driver's car as well..

Looks like it performs just a little bit better than the standard cooper don't you think?

Buy this month's Wheels magazine, new MX-5 pulls higher Gs (0.96) around the skidpan than Evo, Sti, M3, or Boxster, and was described as "automotive heaven with 46 virgins". Each to his own, so enjoy your MGB

the day I take notice of any opinions published in Wheels is the day I give up driving

0-100; no argument the MX5 wins, but 0-100 times are not the be all and end all of performance :P

Here's a quote from this site
http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Dr ... .promo.2.*
...Whether you're slicing through traffic or tearing up a twisty road, there's not much that can stay with this little bugger if the curves are plentiful and open straightaways are few. Backing up this impression is the base car's fast 64-mph run through our slalom course, which puts it wheel-to-wheel through the cones with full-on sports cars like the Nissan 350Z and Mazda RX-8. Yes, this Mini Cooper convertible had the optional Sport package, which gave it the same sticky tires (195/55VR16 Dunlop SP Sport 3000s) as the Cooper S convertible, but there's no denying its giant-killer potential.

Able to attack the slalom with even more vigor, the Mini Cooper S convertible whipped through the cones at nearly 67 mph, a most impressive feat. As both Coopers had identical suspension calibrations, the increased speed is obviously due to the S' greater power that provides more pull from cone to cone. To put this stellar performance into proper perspective, consider this: We're talking a bigger number here than those achieved by the C6 Chevy Corvette and Porsche 911....

The 0-100 times were raised only to highlight the flaw in your flippant comment about the standard cooper performing "just about as well" as the MX-5. You decided to compare the MX-5 to the standard MINI Cooper, and now because you look foolish start quoting overseas website test of an overseas spec Cooper S.

Wheels is arguably Australia's most respected motoring magazine, I would give their opinions a hell of a lot more weight than whatever I read on the internet. Have you driven the new MX-5 or Cooper S back to back?

hey speedy if you love the mx5 so much why havnt you got one?

It was no flippant remark, we have had several drive days with the mx5 club and they struggle to keep up with us. Lets not forget the thread is about convincing this guys mum to buy a MINI not a mazda.

Whoa! :)
Listen, I basically jumped in here because there was a stupid comment that deserved to get shot down. Calm down a bit, stop swinging you handbag at me and read the thread carefully, I have no agenda with either car, just with people who post before they think (like you :D )

Now, we resume our regular programming....

sounds more like your mum wants an MX-5 to me :P rwd too...much more of a driver's car...and has alot of room for performance enhancement...ofcourse this all depends on how much money she's got to spend...the convertible 350z is a lovely car as well if you've got $75,000 to throw at a toy :)

hahaha, the new MX5 performs just about as well as a standard Cooper, as for being more a drivers car, that is debateable, I'd take a Cooper over an MX5 any day.
In fact I'd take a 1970 MGB over an MX5 :P

Standard Cooper 0-100 - 9.1sec
MX-5 0-100 - 7.8sec

plus if she's in the market for something cool i'd give more respect to an MX-5...doesnt have to rely on a name soley for its cred...the bini is a mini by name only :P

the MX-5 is a LOVELY car in my opinion...fits like a glove too...feels real snug but not too snug...good for throwing it into corners...doesnt cost TOO much more than a bini either :)

MX-5: $41,860
Bini Cooper Cabrio: $37,500

I often look foolish in the eys of the uninformed.

You obviously didn't read the article.
It is about both the Cooper and the Cooper S.
I could have just quoted the part about the Cooper but I thought the bit about the Cooper S might just be relevant to the original topic.
In case you have forgotten, the original topic is about persuading his mum to buy a MINI; it is not about alternatives to the MINI. :D

Ah yes Wheels; the magazine that in 2002 voted Falcon XR6 as the best "Sports Car"
