 Post subject: Airbags Or Hydraulics

Was just wondering if people had seen either of theses mods done to a mini.

I'm going to be looking for a mini ute or a van, and was gunna look into it. I'm heading towards a van cause then i can hide the compressor and air cannister a bit easier.

i like the way your thinking i reckon it would be a great project i have seen it once in a UK mini mag a while back

i cant see why it wouldnt work should get a van cut the roof off and put a spa in the back pimpin

its relatively easy, if you can weld... do you have wet or dry suspension??? you may need to run cylinders all round, 80mm Diameter would suit best. for weight. everything else is a peice of cake, just depends on how low you want it to go...

i supply alot of air parts, so let me know if you or anyone else are interested...

ive asked around a bit, had a couple of guys here in WA who said they could do it.

i wanted to do a ute, but everybody knows they are hard to find. i had one semi booked from a place in england, panal beated and primered, with new subframes and wheels, but they got rid of it without telling me. (bastards)

so now im thinking a van. i just want to be able to drop it down hard on the wheels. not really fussed about dropping it to the ground or anything. can get in big trouble over here for airbags so it would really only be used at show time and on cruises as not to attract much attention from the fuzz.

the bags dont need to be too big, will be nothing in the back of van except stereo, and its only gotta move it up and down, side to side. around 700 to 800kgs of car.

Yuo can get hydraulic kits for Mini's.

I emailed a place in the UK that do them, but with postage i was looking at about 2k to 2.5k for the parts.

I'll grab the web address when I find it in one of my mini mags.

unfortunately, juice (hydraulics) is still not totally legal here. air is the way to go. if your not worried about "laying it out" a system would be easy to put together. let me know how keen you are...

would you be able to use pneumatic cylinders instead of hydraulic???? there are a few places that i know that you would be able to get the cylinders from. a dumped mini van, P - I - M - P - I - N

What sort of motor are you looking at putting in????

Would you be able to use Hydrolastic Bags instead ? . . . . . . . .

Just an idea mind you... they already fit in the chassis, have the lines routed nicely....

instead of having the connected front to back, bring all the lines to a common manifold (Or control box, your choice) and add a Hydro pump....

that way, you are still running hydrolastic suspension (kinda factory) but have just added a "Self-levelling controller" .....

Again, just ideas....

the hydorlastic bags will not cope. we experimentd with my morris 1100, and it needed 140psi, just to make it drivable, so the front would need well over 180psi, not to mention the valves and diaphragms inside would collapse

there are bags and cylinders that will fit in position, and really it depends on you. SMC and Parker make some great items for this job, and i have the rights to one of the best compressors for these applications.

What sort of "ball park" costs would you be looking at for a system for a mini ? Not a serious pre-purchase request but curious as to how much it would cost , have often wondered about it .

you would be looking around the 2000 mark, depending on what "quality" of parts you wanted, and how fast you wanted the system to be. if someone had some detailed drawings of the front and rear subframes for me, i could work out some real good stuff...

Not as scary as I thought it would be , would the air bags give a similar ride to the rubber cones/hydrolastic with shock absorbers or would you need coil over shocks to aid in the suspension as well ?

its a bit down the track but most likely a charged 1310. or something similar.
I dont want it to be a race car but it has to have some pull.

i got quoted $4000. all fitted in car. with adjustable hand controller in the cabin. Does this sound reasonable????

he he hydaulics are only illegal if you get caught... he he.
anyway i have heard they put alot of stress on the car, bad bad bad.

with the airbags, you will run a shock with it, and they float like a dream

with cylinders, its more like a "race" suspension in that its a litle harsher

hydraulics are only harsh on your car if you jump it, but these are still rated as one of the best suspension systems for continual use and comfort. but the downside is you need to run a bank of batteries, and you are already limited to space with the pumps etc.

i would suggest cylinders, with adjustable shock valves on the front, and accumulators all round, while running a second set of valves in the rear bottom ports for comfort, and for "doglegging" (sucking one rear wheel off of the ground)
