Hey guys i have had a bit of trouble with a starter motor recently... The one in the cubyy died so i bought a new one, it was a new lucus one (first problem right there) it lasted a week before it went.. So i took it back and got it replaced, the then new replaced lucas new one lasted a week berfore it shat itself also so i took it back and the guys at padstow told me there must have been something wrong with my car so they took the new stuffed one and gave me an old second hand one they had just taken out of a car that was getting stripped and said try this and said if it keeps workin keep it, and if it dosnt then work then its my car.. They gave me my money back on the lucas one away i went... Prob over 12 months down the path the second hand starter motor shits it self  so my question is what starter motors have people been usin as i done want to go for the lucas one again??
Cheers
Dan

There was a conversion about for the gemini starter motor I think do a search

I think you had to file out one of thholes used to bolt it up but not too much more than that. :D was a while ago I read it and I wasn't paying attension   :)

If you don't want to go down the route of modifying a gemini one, I can wholeheartedly suggest the pre-engaged one the Heritage MG sell, it comes with a 12month warranty, might have been more, can't remember..kev has the box..

It's a direct replacement, keeps cranking until the motor turns over and it spins it like a top..even fits behind an oil cooler on clubby's at least..

~$160 i think...

definately Holden Gemini is the way to go unless you are running an oil cooler in a roundie where the Cooper S unit used to sit. Since I think you said it was a clubby, even if you are running an oil cooler it will probably work depending on where the Oil cooler is.

Go to a wrecking yard and get a s/h one off the RWD model gemini's circa '75-83. The later rounded FWD gemini may or may not fit - I don't know. Then you need to file the holes elongating them "inwards" until the starter will sit flush in the hole of the clutch cover and the bolt holes line up.

When it comes time to wire it up, you may have to bypass the original remote solenoid (as the gemini has it's own.

There is a thread here somewhere I think.

It's a `Revolution' brand pre-engaged starter, HMG815 is Heritage MG's p/no on it.
Top starter- spins it like a Jap motor and being new, should last years. :D

Heritage MG also sell Mini parts... :D
This starter is designed to replace the standard Mini starter, In Oz Minis..
If/when I need a starter I will get one too!

I was discussing the performance envelope with GM, the Gemini starter puts out less peak torque and the free load rev range is similar to the Lucas. Where the Gemini unit seems to show promiss is that peak torque is at 50 amps less current draw.

So either make sure your elec system is in good order and use a Lucus or go the Gemini.

My last one was a factory remanufactured (in UK) Lucas one, from Karcraft. Good so far. :D

James,
I think it's a bit smaller body, but the solenoid on top interferes with an S oil cooler if fitted. As does the geMini one.

Its about the same size as Dean's, but Square, not rectangular.....

Oh well, the grinder comes out to attack the driver's side inner guard then !
