With my upcoming 1275 I have the option of pot joints or hardy spicers. How much of a PITA are the hardy spicers to remove when taking the engine out? Pot joints require breaking the ball joints etc, rubber unis require lots of swearing and blood loss, what about the hardy spicers?

Once you undo the 8 nuts, the engine is up- up and awaaaay. Leave balljoints.
Can put it back in without undoing balljoints, if you use enough swear words.
Even easier if you knock 4 or 8 studs out and refit them after shafts aligned.

Pot joints are a good conversion but apart from changing driveshafts to ones with pot joints, the diff has to come out to change the output shafts to suit.

Actually rubber unis can be used straight on pot joint outputs - they sort of float around a bit and leak oil but by the look of the car I took them off the setup lasts a fair while. Soo I suppose teh reverse would be true.

The difference is that the rubber uni outputs won't have a slot for teh circlip that keeps the outer part of the pot joint in place.

Cheers, Ian

Talking about doing the hardie spicer conversion.

Instead of rebushing the side covers could you not just put the output shafts in a lathe and turn them down 1/16 to make them fit. They do not appear to be hardened.

Do you think resizeing the output shaft would cause any weakness.

What do you think

I would be wary of doing this, you could bugger a perfectly good set of H/S output yokes which are worth $$$ these days.

I don't have one handy but I think the S output shafts have bigger spline diameter?

I have bored standard Mini sidecovers to fit S bushes and seals, it's dead easy- some covers have more meat than others so pick among `em first.

www.karcraft.com.au p/no is 22G421.
Or try you usual NZ Mini parts supplier.

Note the bushes are semi-finished, they need boring or reaming to fit after you press them in. I give them .001" clearance on the yoke.
Easy job if you have a lathe at home.. :)
