I've just been chatting to my local mini mechanic and went through all of the stuff i am thinking of doing to my 66 deluxe which currently runs but is not registered. He suggested that since it sounds like I am building a cooper from the ground up I should just buy a 90's rover cooper...i dont really like the newer minis...i prefer the older ones without the air con and all that other guff...i also hate the newer style grille...ick...which the rovers come with...

now...what do you guys think? go with a nice condition rover cooper or go nuts on my '66 and resurrect her from the grave...giving her a new coat of paint...a load of bodywork...some racing gear (performance gear for the new engine and bucket seats etc etc)...and a nice new 1275 A+?

Ummm no offense to the clubby-lovers out there. But they really arent my style. I think they are kinda ugly actually. Just my opinion. Please don't start a flame war coz I said that...I simply prefer round-noses

I'm going the 196* car with A+ engine and all the gismos. Everyone to their own.
The 60's cars would be cheaper to make (maybe not totally restore) and definitely cheaper to insure.

Yes very true mine has cost me a fortune but worth it. I did have the argument with the shannons rep but about my agreed value.

Yep if your car's older then 30 years it's classed as vintage and insurance is cheap! If you have the time and money I'd do up the deluxe.. just my opinion.

do the delux parts are a slight bit more comon and stuff like subframes can be got anywhere and what would you prefer a well built aussie car or a shoddy built pommie car ;)

I agree with you all on this actually. I love my '66 Deluxe and to me...I would feel much better restoring/improving her than buying some piece of crap mid-90's wannabe from the UK...It feels like a matter of honor, she turns 40 next feb and to give her a nice new coat of paint (done the right way) and a few mechanical extras such as an A+ and some front cooper s discs...just seems like the *right* thing to do...plus i really only have room for 1 car in my garage that i can work on at the same time...i could probably fit 4minis in there...but it'd be tight...

stick with the delux, heaps better. im not a fan of the rovers either. no smoking windows, no external door hinges, the bootlid looks stupid, most of them dont have pop out windows in the back, dont like the grille. they weigh more and are slower. the engine bay looks ugly aswell and sportspack arches suck in my opinion. but i spose they are better for doing the shopping in.
but they are still mini's.

Stick with the Deluxe... the Rover is just another `Mini' (sort-of...)
