OK? I am looking at throwing in a 1275 in the van, but want to retain the puddle stick inside. Someone was saying that you can put the wand type gearlever in other gearboxes and that if you have a remote box (not rod change) you just take off the remote part, add a couple of bits to the mechanism then bolt a pressed steel plate to where the remote housing used to go.

Does this sound right..? I cannot think for the life of me about how this works..? Apparently Northern Mini Parts have the parts and there are ?exploded? diagrams that explain how this works.. has anyone seen these pics???

I know that the doc said I could bolt a puddle stick gear box onto a 1275, but what would be stronger and last longer..? A later model remote box or the puddle gears.

Last question ? this will sound stupid, but which cars had the remote box as opposed to the rod change..?

i would say personally to put the 1275 on a rmote box with puddlestick attatchment.

the cars that had remote (as opposed to rod) were all deluxes, coopers, coooper s's and early clubmans.. as far as i know most vans had puddlesticks as did all 850's.

remotes were reserved for clubbies only.

I agree then you get a four synchro box too.

Its pretty easy to do, if you have the toggle gear change as found on pre-rod change mokes and some vans. All you do is fit the toggle and throw away the remote casting. The gearbox casings are identical.

The term is 'pudding stirrer', I've never heard it called puddle before.

It's the orginal 'Magic Wand' gear linkage system from the early cars..the one that comes further forward through the firewall..

I did a search before but I think because I call it a puddle stick and not a pudding stirrer I may not have gotten the right results.

Yeah I used to have a spare 4 synchro remote box that had under gone the pudding stirrer conversion. Still had the remote diff housing on it, but had a sandwich plate underneath and I believe the Y yoke part (Bell Crank Lever apparently) was removed. Didn't some of the Mokes come like this? Don't know why it had been done, the motor came with a Clubman parts car, which was originally remote not pudding stirrer.

I'll try and get some pictures and send them via email, dunno about posting.

I have the magic wand/pudding stirrer whatever style change that Wombat is picking up.

Problem is that I stuffed my back and I'm out of action for a while.

"Pudding Stick" gear shifter, also referred to as "Majic Wand" in some parts of the country because of it's lack of any majic gear shifting qualities I suspect.

The shifter mechanism comes through the firewall just aft of the Diff, has a long handle to reach the driver and consiquently has a very long "throw" of the stick to get from one gear to the next. This also excentuates any wear in the mechanism and so they are natoriously "sloppy" [And fom personal experience, I would describe the feel of such a changer as technically "bloody awful"]


The Good News is that the "Remote" shifter mechanism [Cooper S spec] will bolt straight up to one of these. So if you get a Remote shifter mechanism, the bracket to mount this to the underside of the tunnel and the extension "trumpet" to extend from the diff to the shifter then your set. Open up a hole in the floor for the remote shiter in the more conventional position, and seal up the old hole and your done.


End result - An Awsome gear change.Bbit of a hassle but well worth the effort.

magic wand/puding stirrer for 850 gearboxes is built into the diff housing. it is NOT possible to change to remote gearchange or back with this type.

however - the later vans including clubman vans that had the magic wand/pudding stirrer gearstick have the same diff housing as remote change boxes, but the remote housing that bolts up to the diff housing was considerably shorter to accommodate the different gearlever.

have a good look at the vans gearbox and see what gearbox casting you have. if it is the same as a 3 synchro or 4 synchro remote casting, then you have the latter bolt on short remote and can reuse the gearbox. if not a mini K box with the "short" remote houing from a van is wanted
